400 left the fort. When they left there was enough food for 24 more days for 1200. Now it lasted 32 days, 8 days longer than if they had stayed. 8 is one-third of 24, and one third of 1200 is 400.

== == By direct frontal assault, which resulted in a very heavy lose of life. The Americans could have used the specialized tanks that had been offered to them by the British, but they refused to even test them. The results were that the British and the Canadians had much fewer dead soldiers than the Americans did, and made much deeper advances with their tank support fighting along side of them. The Canadians , by the end of D-one, were 12 miles inland and had captured ALL of their first day objectives with small numbers of dead and wounded. That was a direct consequence of their having the support of the specialized tanks, that broke thru the German bunkers with their 235 mm bunker buster charges. The flame thrower tank, the bunker buster tank, and the bridge laying tank were all used by the two other Allied nations to very good effect, while the Americans were attacking on foot, with little armored support. The US did decide to use the " swimming tank " but they put them into the water way too soon, as much as 7 miles off the beach, and those tanks sank as the flotation devices were not designed for such high waves. So the troops had to attack the fortifications without proper armored support. This resulted in many needless deaths for the Americans.

As far as I can tell, no artillery landed in any of the first or second waves on Omaha Beach. Gunfire support came from the air force and the Navy, and the latter was vital to the invasion's success.
How did Gold Utah Omaha Sword and Juno beaches get their code names?
Concerning Omaha and Utah, the beaches on which U.S. troops were landed, they were named after cities in the U.S.
There was a committee that was given the job if coming up with "code names" and "operational names". Many were chosen to be as unlike the actual operation as was possible. If, for instance, a operation was a maritime raid on the french coast, the code name would NOT be either about France or the navy. The code names were either one word such as "Rutter" or two parts such as "Market Garden". Things such as the first primitive RADAR sets were given a "cover name" so they would not be referred to by their actual name. Some of these were "OBOE" and "Unicorn". The preplanning for an operation would have a code name, and the operation would have a different code name. The training for the Dieppe raid was code named "Tiger" and the actual raid was "Rutter". The actual raid later was done under the code name or as you might call it "cover name" of Jubilee, but you can find out more about that everywhere on the net.

Did Germany surrender on D-Day?
No. D-Day is when the invasion at Normandy started. The day Germany surrendered is referred to as VE (Victory in Europe) day.
Operation Overlord - D-Day
D-Day was originally scheduled for June 5, 1944. SHAEF arrived at this date by considering two factors-moonlight and tide. H-hour would be near sunrise, when the amphibious troops would have a rising tide, which would enable them to land close to obstacles without coming ashore on top of them. The paratroopers needed a full moon for visibility. The days with the proper tide-moonlight formula closest to the target date were June 5, 6 and 7. The 5th was chosen for D-Day to allow a buffer in case the attack needed to be postponed.
The long awaited establishment of a "Second Front" took place on 6 June 1944. American, British and Canadian troops invaded France and set up beachheads in the Normandy region. By the end of June, the Allies were able to put 850,000 men and 150,000 vehicles ashore. After heavy fighting, the Allies were able to gain a solid footing in France and the success of a second front was assured. Allied air superiority was a key factor in the success by limiting German counter attacks, and possible reinforcements from reaching the beaches.
Another month of heavy fighting would occur before the Allies were able to break out of the beach areas and into open country. Once clear of the coastal areas, the German Army was no longer capable of holding the Allied forces back. The German Army began a long, hard retreat back toward their own borders.
Germany was now faced with a two front-war. Hitler was forced to split his army in order to face both the Red Army in the East and the British, American and Canadian armies in the West. Under this relentless pressure, the Germans would be forced to surrender in just less than one year.
