Declaration of Independence

The Declaration of Independence separated the United States from Great Britain. This meant that the elected governments of the states were the only legitimate ones, and that the Continental Congress was the legal government of the colonies as a whole.

Thomas Jefferson often contradicted himself. He was the creator of the Democratic-Republican party, the party that believed in strict interpretation of the Constitution, although his actions in office were very different. One such example was using the national bank system to buy Louisiana, the same system he complained about for many years, and also did not receive approval from Congress. He believed that all men were created equal (from the US Constitution) and believed slavery to be immoral. However, he owned many, many slaves. He thought that political parties will destroy a nation (ain't that the truth), but he one of the first parties. The Embargo act was designed to hurt British economy, but it devastated US economy. This does not make him a bad president, though. All presidents have their enemies, mistakes, and bad choices. You decide if he is a good president.

Thomas Jefferson's target audience was the American people. He wanted to unify the nation that due to differences between loyalist and radicals was not working together to overthrow Britain and gain it's independence. Jefferson's defiant Declaration of Independence had a universal impact unmatched by any other American document. This "shout heard round the world" has been a source of inspiration to countless revolutionary movements against arbitrary authorities.

The Second Continental Congress appointed Benjamin Franklin, future President Thomas Jefferson, future President John Adams, Robert Livingston, and Roger Sherman to a committee to write the Declaration of Independence. Although Jefferson did most of the actual writing, John Adams was the chair of the committe.
