What does G4 and F12 mean for coins?

G4 and F12 are two of the many possible grades describing a coin's condition.

Conditions are normally broken down in to major categories designated by letters, and numbers are then used to further refine the condition within those major categories.

The letter grades are:

  • P: Poor. So worn that the coin is barely recognizable, and generally not worth collecting.
  • G: Good, actually quite worn but the design and date are recognizable. Usually the lowest collectible grade
  • VG: Very Good. Still quite worn, but with more details showing
  • F: Fine. Moderate wear, with many details visible
  • VF: Very Fine. Slight wear, all details visible
  • XF (or EF) Extremely Fine. The coin has minor wear.
  • AU: Almost Uncirculated. The coin has been in circulation but has essentially no wear
  • MS: Mint State. The coin is in the same condition as when it was minted.
  • PR: Proof. A coin struck with special dies giving it (usually) a mirror-like finish, and made for sale to collectors rather than spending.

Within those grades, numbers are assigned ranging from 1 (the lowest) to 70 (the highest). For example, the numbers from 4 to 7 are assigned to the Good category, so a G4 coin is more worn than a G7, but neither one is in decent enough condition to fall into the VG range. Similarly F grades range from F12 to F19, and so on.
