Dog Behavior

Dogs are unable to talk just like we do, but we can still understand their feelings by observing their behavior and body language. It is compulsory that an owner is aware of his dog's body language, as it will not only strengthen their bond, but will also prevent tragic results where the owner is forced to abandon his dog due to behavior problems. In this category, there are questions relating to the different body languages of dogs, their behavior, etc.

Are big dogs good with small dogs?

Some small dogs are smart, and so are some big dogs, so yes and no. It depends on the dog. Different sources give different lists of 'smartest dogs', but most breeds which figure are larger breeds. An exception is the papillon.

Why does a dog's urine look clear like water and not smell like it either?

It is a good sign, his kidneys are working and he is drinking plently of water. When it is cloudy is and has a very strong smell is usually a sign that either not enough water going in or his kidney's aren't working at top speed. Either way this sounds better than normal, unless this is very uncommon for this dog.

How can you stop your dog eating other dogs poo?

This is a gross, yet good question. This could be very dangerous to the dog, so it needs to be stopped. I, myself had a dog eat another dogs waste, and he was sick for days. Well pretty much pull him away from it if on a leash and scold him lightly. No need to yell at them, just in a stern voice, say "no!". If he/she is not on a leash, well then, go over to him, pull him away nicely, scold him no, without yelling at him/her, and she/he should get the message. If dog keeps on doing this, take him over to it, show him it, say "No. No eating. No." while pointing at it and your dog. Also, take him over to it, let him/her smell it, let him take a nip at it, not letting him take any, and pull him/er back and scold.

What are the signs of distemper in a dog?

The American Veterinary Medical Association suggests that you consult your veterinarian if your pet shows any of the following signs (one or more could be a sign of distemper or other serious illness): * Abnormal discharges from the nose, eyes, or other body openings. * Loss of appetite, marked weight losses or gains, or excessive water consumption. * Difficult, abnormal, or uncontrolled waste elimination. * Abnormal behavior, sudden viciousness, or lethargy. * Abnormal lumps, limping, or difficulty getting up or lying down. * Excessive head shaking, scratching, and licking or biting any part of the body. * Dandruff, loss of hair, open sores, and a ragged or dull coat. * Foul breath or excessive tarter deposits on teeth

Why does my dog bite my hands all the time?

A dog will stop teething 2 to 4 weeks after they start teething. Giving them plenty of chew toys will help save your furniture from being destroyed. Puppies may chew on your hand because their teeth hurt. Say no in a stern voice, but don't get mad at them, instead give them a chew toy to chew on. As soon as they start chewing on the chew toy give them praise. Also ice cubes can help during the teething process. Some dogs find them fun to pay with, and they can help to numb the gums to help with the pain.

How do you teach your lab to get along with other dogs?

You have to train it.

Pick the dog you want to be dominant. Tie or pen the non-dominant chosen dog and feed both dogs with one penned and one free. Takes a few times, but the free dog establishes dominance.

What if a puppy doesn't open his eyes after the two weeks?

the puppys eye film has not yet disolved all the way yet to give it the release of its eye lids. therefore its not somthing to worry about, it just means that puppy is taking a little longer than the others to develope. or it can also mean that the puppys eyes (are) able to open, but the puppy hasn't gotten the hint yet that its able to, so it just feels that its eyes should stay closed because they don't quite get it yet.

Is it normal for your puppies to bite each other?

This is normal puppy behavior and also a way of establishing dominance in their small pack. In order to avoid one of them becoming overly shy, it is a good idea that you begin taking them together for short daily walks on a leash to release some of that energy and also learn manners. Littermates will play-fight a lot and it can sound like they're going to kill each other, but blood is not drawn and no skin is broken. If it goes to actual injury (skin is penetrated) then it has gone too far. To break up a puppy fight you can probably scruff them (hold each pup by the shoulder skin firmly on the ground) and speak sternly. Think of how mother dog would have held a misbehaving pup with her teeth and a paw while she growled (stern warning).

Make sure to have separate training sessions with each pup as they grow up. A puppy class with off-lead, supervised socialization is a good idea so they learn from others what is not allowed.

Are dogs lonely when at home alone?

yes, when you leave them at home they think you aren't coming back, that is why they are always so excited when they see you return. you can get them another dog to play with or a treat that will take them a long time to eat.

What is supposed done when you mate your dog and they get stuck for over half an hour the male dog is completely turned around and the female is dragging him?

It sounds like the two dogs are still attached, due to the male has knotted inside the female to ensure fertilisation. It is also common for the male dog to turn around after mating as this is a more comfortable position. If the female is dragging him or otherwise becoming unsettled, you need to keep both dogs as calm as possible, as any struggling can cause damage both dogs' reproductive organs.

Are weimeraners a hyper dog?

Usually not, but they are active dogs and do require an hour or two a day of rigourous exercise, perhaps more. Many sporting dogs like the Weimeraner are lively and full of play, especially when they are young. Keep in mind that they were bred to endure long romps through woods and fields. As your pup ages, she is likely to settle down to a less hectic pace.

Breeds that are sometimes considered "hyper," or obsessively active, are the Jack Russell Terrier, the Dalmatian, and the Border Collie.

Why do dogs wrestle with other dogs?

It's possible the male is trying to mate with the female and she's not having it, or they are not compatible with each other, perhaps jealousy over their owner, territory, and food are some issues.

Watch them to see what triggers their fighting then address the issue, if you can't solve it then try a dog behaviorist/obedience professional.

What do you call a mix of a Carin and a Westie?

Can dogs eat plain flour?

What do dogs think about there owners?

Dogs have the same hierarchy as wolves for they were actually just bred from wolves. People like to think of their dogs as children, which is because Humans, too, have a hierarchy, though more subtle than the one of dogs. Children are the members of the Human "pack" that the rest of the group take care of, so in an adult Human's mind the dog is one of the children to be cared for. Children play with their dogs like other children, so from the Human's point of view a dog is a child.

Dogs should think of their owners as the Alphas or leaders of their pack. In an all dog pack the Alpha will be the only one allowed to breed and will lead hunts and establish a territory for the rest of the pack to maintain. In the dog's mind all of this is going on inside the house. The adult humans are the Alpha male and female and are the only ones who have "puppies". The "puppies" are pretty much the lowest ranking and the Alphas, the parents, are in charge. The main difference in how a dog thinks of itself and a human thinks of a dog is that the dog thinks of itself not as a puppy or of the Humans as it's parents and Alphas but that it is a Subordinate of the pack.

Here is a random example:

Lets say there are four Humans and two dogs in a family/pack. The Alpha male and female and their two puppies. The dogs' jobs are to do what the Alphas say, defend the territory, and protect and sometimes play with the puppies.

Now another example: my house.

It seems as though my mother would be the Alpha, but I've found that the dogs seem to think of my mother and I both as Alphas. My mother, of course, is in charge of my sister and I, who, to the dogs, are the "puppies". But I am the dogs' trainer. I've worked them on basic commands (sit, lie down, off the couch, etc) since the beginning. So I am unclear on how they perceive my rank. My sister, though, is definitely the "puppy"; the dogs are reluctant to move off the couch for her to sit, and often won't until she repeats the "down" command twice, while they jump down immediately for both me and my mother, though sometimes a bit more slowly for me but always at the first request. So the dogs definitely know their place as subordinates, though the female seems to drift between Subordinate and Omega. Now here is where the cats come in. Cats have a completely different hierarchy than dogs, and the only similarity is that there is a dominant, Alpha cat, though not a pair. The male dog actually plays with one of the male cats as he does the other dog, though not as often, and the same dog also grooms the cats while they lick his head, so they definitely have some pack order going on. My best guess is that the female cat, who is very shy and runs away at any sudden sound, is, to the dogs at least, the Omega. She is often picked on by the same male cat that plays with the dog, and the dogs, especially the male, will bark at them as to tell them to quit arguing. Omega dogs are often picked on by higher ranking pack members and there is sometimes a pack member who will step in, so that is the Omega cat. The older male cat's rank is unclear to me, the only interaction he has with the dogs is the occasional grooming session, but I'm sure that at least the male dog thinks of the younger male as his equal.

I'm sorry if I went on too long, but I do hope this answers your question XD

Do dogs stick out their tongues because they are hot?

The tongue does not grow but it is stuck out in the air so it can cool off. The dogs don't sweat much so that is how they cool down. The tongue is wet and breathing hard over the tongue cools it.

Do dogs prefer certain dog food smells?

Yes. If they didn't it'd be impossible to train them to track.

What does it mean if a dog wags its tail with its ears down and being happy?

Haha! It depends on the breed of dog you have. For my dog, it is natural since he is a six year old beagle and his ears always droop, although they do raise a tad bit if he is listening intently. However, if you have a short-eared dog, then I would say that the dog is extremely comfortable with you and that he wants to spend time with you. Most dogs do this with mainly their owners. Either way, a dog wagging its' tail is not always a intimation of it being happy, sometimes it is ready to pounce and play with you!

Hope this helps!

Do dogs cry when they are in pain?

I have a nine year old female (spayed) Shih Tzu that has been crying and whining straight for the last 24 hours. I took her to the vet today, and she could not see anything other than tenderness of her abdomen as a cause. She was given an NSAID pain shot and medication to calm her stomach.... but she is still really sad and whining off and on and I have no idea what to do to help her.

she is eating normally and doesn't seem to have any other issues?
