Who was in the closest finish in the Iditarod?
Mitch Seavey & Paul Gephurt
Actually, it wasn't Seavey and Gebhart (not Gephurt). It was Dick Mackey and Rick Swenson in 1978, with Mackey winning by one second. Both mushers were running down Front Street in Nome, sometimes on the runners and sometimes running beside their teams. Dick Mackey's lead dog crossed the line first, but Swenson was the first human over the line. However, it was determined that the winner was the one whose lead dog's nose crossed the finish line first. Mackey's lead dog's nose crossed that line one second before Swenson's dog, which is to date the closest finish in I-rod history. (The 2010 race is still underway, however, so that could change!)
