I have absolutely no idea!

What was the Lifetime high for the Dow Jones in the years 2007 and 2008? October 9, 2007 the DOW closed at 14164. This appears to be all time high close on the Dow. (See www.the-privateer.com/chart/dow-long.html ) On an intraday basis a couple days later the DOW touched a High: 14,279.96 (all-time high on intraday basis) before reversing to fall to a Closing Price: 14,015.12 ------------------------------------------------------------------------- The intraday high for 2008, YTD as of 11/22/08 appears to have been at the very beginning of the year: Dow Jones Industrial Average Wednesday, January 02, 2008 Closing Price: 13,043.96 Open: 13,251.82 High: 13,338.23 Looks like the high on a closing basis was just a bit higher Friday, May 02, 2008 Closing Price: 13058.2 Open: 13103.8 High: 13,191.49 Hope this helps.

The lowest closing price for the Dow in 2008 was 7,552.29 on November 20th.

On Wednesday, March 6, 2013 the Dow Jones closed at 14,296.24. That topped the all-time high of 14,164 of October 9, 2007.

Update: On July 3, 2014, The Dow Jones closed at 16,976.24.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average was founded in May 1896. It is based on thirty large companies that trade in the US and the average is created by weighting the stock prices to get a realistic overal value.

Numerically speaking, you will find MANY points that are substantially lower than the crisis we're currently facing. However, one must realize that world economics are constantly changing and that its difficult to compare years that are more than a few years apart. just looked at the charts and it appeared to be around 14000 a year ago. Today, 10/8/08, at 11:36 PST the DJIA is around 9555 and a 40 year chart appears to have a base at 8500 to 7500 points but below 7500 there is a very steep slide down to 4000. There is not really a stock symbol for the Dow Jones Industrial Average as it is simply an average composed of (and tracks) 30 different large/diverse American companies. However, there is a symbol/security that tracks the Dow Jones Industrial Average and moves in direct correlation with it, and that is "DIA". Basically speaking, if the Dow Jones goes up 1%, then the DIA will be up 1%.
