Ethiopians are culturally, politically, and ethnically (though not completely) Sub saharan African (Black African) and have always been. However, it is indeed true that, given the history of Horn Africa as a crossroads of sorts, there is a very stong Middle eastern influence in the region, an influence that is interwoven with native African influence. Now, with that said, they are not Arabs or brown people nor have they ever been so, for the Arabs themselves call them "Habesh" or "Habesha" which means "mixed people". So, they are mixed, however, don't go up to an Ethiopian and call him an Afro-arab or a "biracial", he WILL give a really confused/puzzled/offended look, for the ethnic mixing occurred thousands of years ago, millenniums before even the Arab macro-ethnic group existed. So, they do not feel necessarily close to Arabs or identify as multiracial. [This is NOT to say that they do not see themselves as somewhat distinct from the rest of Black Africa. They do. It goes the other way as well. Don't be surprised if you see a regular Black African referring to a Somali or Ethiopian as an "arab." or a black arab.] They see themselves as Ethiopians. It may be common thing for you to hear him identify as black Africans. However, even more than that, they are Ethiopians, a people of Africa

p.s.-- Ethiopians are not part-White. Cape Verdeans are (Portuguese blood), but even they see themselves as Africans.
