Is the European Union in Brussels?

Not technically. There is no capital of Europe, as Europe isn't a country, it's a continent. However due to the large numbers of Europe wide institutions, it could be argued that Brussels is the de facto capital of the Europe union as it houses the European commission, the European council and the second seat of the European Parliament.

The EU is comprised of only 27 countries in Europe and excludes European countries such as Norway and Switzerland.

What countries are applying for the EU?

The countries that have applied for membership in the European Union include Croatia, Montenegro, Serbia, Albania, Macedonia, Turkey, and Iceland.

There are really three major levels in this process. The first level is sending in an application, in which Serbia and Albania have just done. These countries will have to have their application reviewed and accepted to move on.

The next major step is approval of this application and a candidacy spot. This is where the countries of Iceland, Turkey, Montenegro, and Macedonia are currently at. Right now, the EU is negotiating as to allow Turkey and/or Iceland to become members and it looks like Macedonia and Montenegro will have no problem with gaining membership.

The final level is acceptance, and this is where Croatia is. Croatia has been accepted for membership to the European Union and will officially join on July 1, 2013.

Also, additional information for possible candidates. The European Union is seeking Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo to join.

How successful was the EU?

Europe has been very successful for a number of reasons. One, there was a certain collective reckoning after World War II, and the presence of very enlightened statesmen, and the support of the United States, all coming together at around the same time and helping to kickstart a process, a very mild and primarily economic European integration among a few core countries. What they grew into, the European Union today, is a remarkable success story. There has always been a debate about whether Europe should be widening or deepening. And the fact is that Europe is done built, it has grown broader. And since 1991, it is grown by, on average, one country per year. It was 6 to 12, and 16 is other at 27, and may soon be 30 member states. So it has grown broader, it is also grown deeper. The density and depth of institutions that exist in Brussels, Luxemburg, Strasburg and elsewhere, is absolutely unbelievable. The common currency, and all of these sorts of developments, parliamentary-wise, judicially, and so forth; the existence of the European Commission. It was not self evident that these institutions would have grown the way they did in the 1950s, but they have. That’s been a remarkable success story, even if it were to stop today.See the related link for further information.

Why is NAFTA bad for the US?

Anti-NAFTA members tried unsuccessfully to stop the deal from going through. They feared that the trade agreement, signed by pro-business governments would wipe out years of legislation designed to control the actions of those who put profits ahead of just about everything else -- from workers' rights to the environment.

Many people who felt the same way in Mexico because NAFTA meant the opening up of that country to cheap, mass-produced, and subsidized farm produce from the U.S. -- something poor peasants couldn't compete with.

The World Bank has predicted that by the year 2025, two-thirds of the

world's population will run short of fresh drinking water. Given such a grim future, it comes as little surprise that Fortune magazine recently defined water as "the oil of the 21st century."

Privatization Can Leave the Poor With No Access to Clean Water

Working families suffer: In the US, more than 765,000 jobs have disappeared as a result of NAFTA. When these laid off workers find new jobs, they earn 23 percent less on average than at their previous employment.

The environment suffers: In the maquiladora zones along the US-Mexico border, the increased pollution and the improper disposal of chemical wastes have dramatically raised rates of hepatitis and birth defects.

The Agreement Is Being Written Without Citizen Input- While citizens are left in the dark, corporations are helping to write the rules for the FTAA.

In the Mexican state of Guerrero, 40 percent of the forests have been lost in the last eight years, and massive clear cutting has led to soil erosion and habitat destruction.

The Agreements Will Hurt Family Farmers -NAFTA has been a disaster for small farmers in the US and Mexico. By favoring the interests of agribusiness corporations over the needs of family farmers

Between 1995 and 2000, the prices US farmers receive for corn declined 33 percent, 42 percent for wheat, and 34 percent for soybeans. No wonder that since NAFTA went into effect 33,000 small farmers in the US have gone out of business

At least half a million farmers have left their land.

The Agreement Will Increase Poverty and Inequality

The agreement was written in secret where Us trade officials met in private to discuss it.

The poor cannot afford drugs for medical uses and could die.

Many American labour unions oppose NAFTA because it takes away jobs from American workers as manufacturers relocate in Mexico to take advantage of cheaper labour.

Canada has lost 398, 837 jobs ever since NAFTA began, from 1994 to 2001.

NAFTA has caused huge amounts of toxic waste to be dumped into Countries with weak environment laws, Canada that is. This increases the risks of contaminating the drinking water in Canada. Because of NAFTA, Canada is now importing four times the hazardous waste from the United States

Who thought of the EU?

Who started the EU? The EU is a collection of countries all together. It began in six countries which were, # Germany # Italy # France # Luxemburg # Netherlands # Belgium The EU was primarily started by Jean Monnet, who pursuaded Robert Schuman to go ahead with his plans.

Some have interpreted statements by Winston Churchill to indicate that he initiated the European Union. This is not correct, as also indicated by the fact that Great Britain is not a founding member of the EU. What Churchill envisioned was, after the Berlin airlift crisis, embodied in the North Atlantic Treaty and the corresponding organisation, NATO.
