What is a common myth?

How does female sexuality threaten the men in Bram Stoker's Dracula?

Lucy Westenra is the attractive, vivacious heroine sort yet represents the old-fashion, Victorian type of woman dependent on men. She is 'seduced' by Count Dracula, killed and turned into a vampire by him. Her 'suitors' are then required to destroy her.

Wilhelmina "Mina" Murray is also a Victorian type, the quiet and submissive sort, but she serves her fiance Johnathan by possessing, what was then, considered to be a number of modern values, namely knowing short-hand, and business administration. Later when she becomes the Count's 'Living Thrall' and is in a sort of telepathic link with him the men have to concede to her a leading role in taking the battle to the count. Before this the men were constantly trying to 'protect' her from any such a role by denying her involvement and even information. She was religated into keeping a diary of the events. However, at the end, it is she and Doctor Van Helsing alone that approach Castle Dracula in preparation for the final battle.

In addition there are three vampire brides of Dracula who very nearly devour Johnathan. He has to be saved from them by the Count himself. (Yes, the story does get complicated.) It requires both Doctor Van Helsing and Mina to stand them down during the night, then the Doctor alone has to hunt them down during the day and destroy them all before night returns.

(However it is the man who are the final victors. Mina takes only a minor part at the final battle and has to be 'saved from her thralldom' by them. )

How does intellectual property enrich traditional knowledge and folklore?

The first step is for traditional knowledge and folklore to enrich intellectual property instead of the other way around.

Many copyrighted works can be traced to traditional or folkloric roots. For example, Ella Fitzgerald's popular 1938 recording of "A Tisket, A Tasket" is a contemporary arrangement and performance of a 19th century nursery rhyme.

Patents, especially for mechanical devices, often derive from the traditional methods of crafting. Some drug patents began with research on and improvements to traditional medicine.

In exchange for all of this raw material, creators and inventors agree that eventually, their works will pass into the public domain, to become raw material for the next generation. Granted, patent law represents that ideal far better than copyright does, but the notion is still there.

How do you kill a vampir?

The supernatural, blood-sucking immortal creatures do not really exist. However, in fantasy literature there are multiple ways in which a vampire can be felled.

  1. Spear it in the heart with a wooden stake
  2. Expose it to sunlight
  3. Slap it with some garlic and throw holy water on it (may not kill it)

Those are the generic basics, though each literature/film will have its own rules. More helpful suggestions :

To keep a vampire at bay :

  • Flash a crucifix at them.
  • Wear garlic.
  • Rebuke them in the name of the Lord
  • Spill a pound of salt - they'll have to count every grain (Dracula 3000)

To kill a vampire :

  1. Look for a hole above a grave. Sometimes vampires have to dig their way out.
  2. Scatter salt on the floor in the vampire's latest victim's room. Help the vampire lead you right to his or her tomb.
  3. Use garlic, hawthorn branches, or a cross to trap your vampire in a corner. (protect yourself from revenge by making a cross of tar on your front door).
  4. Dig the vampire up on a Friday. According to the early Greeks, that's when a vampire is weakest. Take advantage of the day when vampires can't come out to play.
  5. Pound iron stakes through his coffin and straight into the ground if you catch him at rest.
  6. Bury his body under running water - vampires can't stand it.
  7. Fire a silver bullet blessed by a priest into his heart.
  8. Drive an aspen, ash or white thorn stake through his heart with a single blow if you want to make a lasting impression.
  9. Pour boiling water, boiling oil or holy water into his grave.
  10. Cremate his body or make a paste from his flesh for closure. Then sit down and feast on the beast.

Vampires are already dead. They are considered "undead" creatures, who left their graves after dying. They are going to come back unless you do it the right way. There are two things you must do to kill a vampire:

1. Strike him in the heart with a dagger

2. Cut his head off and bury it separately from the body. (It can still come back if it can find its head.)

(Recommended reading: "Vampires" by Nancy Garden)

-------

Staking a vampire (sticking a stake into its heart) puts it into torpor (permanent sleep) unless the stake is removed, whereupon the vampire in question will spring back to life (or unlife, more properly) and presumably annihilate you. Staking a vampire renders it defenseless and allows you to cut off its head, which is the only way to actually kill a vampire, other than exposing it to natural sunlight. Garlic kills their appetite, (they'll be less inclined to bite you when you stink), holy water burns them like sunlight, and real sunlight will fry a vampire to ash in seconds. The crucifix is said to appear as a blinding light to vampires, but if you see one get the axe, not a crucifix.

Vampires need to drink blood to keep their undead bodies alive, so depriving a vampire of blood for a long time will eventually kill it, though a starving vampire will go insane and in its rage may become considerably stronger and more destructive than it was before.

-------

The ways to kill a vampire include:

  • stab a vampire with a wooden stake, or a silver one
  • put holy water on them
  • garlic bombs

Or you could just scare them away with a cross, or a picture of a god or goddess.

-------

As vampires are already dead the question is an oxymoron.

You can kill a vampire by catching it and ripping off its head but other than that it's extremely dfficult.

First of all a vampire is already dead. They are reanimated corpses and its is 'more correct' to refer to destroying them rather than killing them.

There is a gradation to the vitality of vampires and zombies. In fact vampires and zombies are creatures of the same type and all that distinguishes them is the degree to which they can 'heal' and 'steal life-energy'.

  • At the extreme zombie end is the reanimated corpse that has no ability to heal or steal life-energy and to destroy them all you have to do is wait for them to rot all on their own.
  • Those zombies that can heal to some degree can do so if they get something to eat. They can be destroyed by simple physical means.
  • There are zombies that can steal life-energy but cannot heal to any great extent. If they lose an arm, it stays lost. These can be destroyed by copious physical damage.
  • Those zombies that can both steal life-energy and apply that energy to perpetuating their reanimation are the beginnings of the vampire portion of the continuum. Many of these are malformed and demented, often grotesquely so and cannot improve their condition. Count Orlock falls in this category. Not only was he malformed but he also carried a plague which he inflicted on the city of Bremen.
  • Those that can apply the life-energy they steal to their healing start to make the 'classical vampire'. This however isn't a complete class. There are limitations on how much a vampire can heal and variations in how much they can heal depending on certain conditions. Count Dracula was powerful enough to walk around in day-light and to alter his physical reality however he was significantly reduced in power during the day and was finally destroyed by a knife through the heart in the last minutes of sun-set. It should be noted that Johnathan Harker managed to wound Dracula while he lay in his coffin during the day and Dracula carried the scar of it through-out the novel.
  • It should be noted that the old 'stake through the heart' was only meant to pin the vampire in its coffin, not to destroy them and there are vampires that can with-stand any amount of physical damage. This goes in a gradation but at the extreme most can be destroyed by having their heads severed.
  • Then there are those who have have their entire body dismembered and scattered and they have still managed to reassemble themselves. To this last group the only option is to entirely burn the body and scatter the ashes.

According to the original "Dracula" by Bram Stoker: The only way you can became a vampire is if you are a virgin and are bitten by a vampire from the opposite sex. A person takes several days to became a vampire, but you can prevent that with blood transfusions and you should also put up garlic because the vampire may come back for seconds! Vampires are scared of Bibles, Crosses, Holy water, and garlic. They are immune to mortal weapons during the night. During the day they do not die like some people think, they just lose all of their powers.

The ways to kill a vampire:

1. Cut off its head and stab it in the heart - doesn't have to be wood, and put garlic between the severed head and body. It also has to be done during the day or when the vampire is resting.

2. Burn it. Then throw the ashes in the ocean.

  • a wooden stake through the heart
  • sunlight (only young ones)
  • garlic up the nose and in the mouth (bury up to the neck)
  • another vampire
  • decapitation
  • burning
  • silver cross
  • holy water
  • entering holy grounds
  • death of the vampires maker
  • dentists
  • draining of ALL blood

Which side are the four horsemen on?

The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse [or Revelation] symbolize: false religion [including false Christianity], wars, famine, pestilence and disease.

Not too many folks would regard these as "for us" or anything in mankind's favor.

These things that plague mankind are the direct result of "sinning" [disobeying God's Commandments]: "...Sin is the transgression [breaking] of the Law." (I John 3:4)

God's Ten Commandments reveal to His Children [mankind created in His image] HOW TO LOVE GOD and ONE ANOTHER. And the Four Horsemen traverse the length and breadth of the earth as a result of mankind's disobedience to his Creator's Commandments.

Man's disobedience to God's First Commandment ["Thou shalt have no other gods before Me."] has resulted in "false religion," which, to most people's chagrin and surprise, is THE MAIN CAUSE OF WARS throughout the generations of man. You have only to take an honest look at what's going on in the world right now to see how a religion, taken to extremes, is affecting every nation on the planet.

And the other three horsemen naturally follow in the wake of this disobedience and perversion of our Creator's Love.

Famine follows and overlaps war... pestilence and disease follows and overlaps in the wake of death and war.

It's a vicious cycle of "sin" [disobedience to the Ten Commandments] that mankind, who chose the wrong god to worship and obey in the beginning [see the Garden of Eden account in Genesis 3] has repeated throughout his generations.

It's an endless cycle of religious hatred, envy, resentment, jealousy, lust, greed and death that in the end, is definitely AGAINST MANKIND. And the god man chose to worship and obey in the beginning laughs with delight at the destruction he's caused and guided God's special creation, man, through... as well as the ongoing destruction of the once-perfect earth that sustains him.

In the end... the Four Horsemen are "for themselves." These four destructive results of our sins [disobedience] are self-perpetuating. And unless SELFISH, REBELLIOUS mankind learns to Obey his Creator's Commandments -- LEARNS SELFLESS LOVE -- then the Four Horsemen will one day complete their global ride:

"For that will be a time of GREATER HORROR than anything the world has ever seen or will ever see again. In fact, unless that time of CALAMITY is shortened, THE ENTIRE HUMAN RACE WILL BE DESTROYED..." (Matt.24:21-22 NLT New Living Translation)

Fortunately for mankind, his Creator is going to stop the Four Horsemen from completing their ultimate destructive mission [after man has learned life's cruel lessons]... because, contrary to popular belief, God is on our side. He's always been there for His Children. They are the ones who "Obey His Commandments" [Rev.14:12]:

"...But it [the soon-coming "horrifying days of Four Horsemen-induced calamity"] WILL BE SHORTENED FOR THE SAKE OF GOD'S CHOSEN ONES." (verse 22)

It is a fact of life, however, that the effects of the Four Horsemen don't come off as a total detriment to man. At least to those who can see these things for what they are... the self-imposed problems and trials of life. There is a tragic... yet necessary aspect to them:

"We can REJOICE, TOO, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that THEY ARE GOOD FOR US - they HELP US LEARN TO ENDURE. And endurance develops STRENGTH OF CHARACTER in us, and Character strengthens our confident expectation of Salvation. And this expectation will not disappoint us. For we know HOW DEARLY GOD LOVES US, because He has given us the Holy Spirit to FILL OUR HEARTS WITH HIS LOVE." (Rom.5:3-5 NLT)

The Four Horsemen are man's constant stark reminder of his disobedience to his Creator's Commandments -- his natural, carnal minded, selfish and rebellious flesh and blood inability to Love and Respect God, as well as his "neighbor" [your neighbor is anyone who isn't you]... his fellow man ... with God's Selfless Love.

Man's disobedience [sin] gives the Four Horsemen their power... their worldwide strength and endurance. Resentment and hatred of beliefs different from our own. The bickering, fighting and death that it propagates. Famine and the pestilence and disease transmitted globally in all compass directions from the festering unattended pollution left on the worldwide battlefield.

They aren't "real" horsemen, of course. They are the manifestations of our disobedience to God's Laws. They are the "effects" of what we have "caused" through our REBELLIOUS ACTIONS... all of which begin with A THOUGHT!

"Murder" begins with the negative spiritual attitude of "anger and hatred." Adultery, disrespect for God, parents and others, stealing and lying all begins with the attitude of "lust" [coveting - see Rom.7:7]... the selfish desire to take what is not ours, and do what is not our prerogative.

These "four things" hold no allegiance to [for or against] anyone or anything. It's the "sinner"... the one(s) whose thoughts and actions "cause" and bring these "four effects" to fruition... that "choose up sides" to take these "deadly effects" as far as they dare to go. Which for some [if this world's god has anything to say or do about it] is to "utter destruction."

The "four effects" of man's sinful actions aren't conscious things. They don't "choose up sides"... but merely exist due to man's disobedience to his Creator's Laws.

It's man's Creator who is FOR US! It's He who is able to help us overcome the "four destructive effects" we've created for ourselves... by REMOVING THE CAUSE [our disobedience].

"Therefore, since we have been MADE RIGHT in God's sight BY FAITH, we have Peace with God because of Jesus Christ our LORD has done FOR US." (Rom.5:1 NLT)

"When we were utterly helpless, Christ came at just the right time and died FOR US sinners. Now, no one is likely to die for a good person, though someone might be willing to die for a person who is especially good. But God showed His Great Love FOR US by sending Christ to die FOR USwhile we were still sinners. And since we have been made Right in God's sight by the Blood of Christ, He will certainly save us from God's Judgment. (verses 6-9)

"This suffering is all part of what God has called you to. Christ, who suffered FOR YOU, is your example. FOLLOW IN HIS STEPS." (I Peter 2:21 NLT)

Jesus Christ and His Father are in the process of "removing the four effects" from planet earth [the one place in the universe to which He has confined SIN {disobedience}] until He defeats them, altogether.

Because "false religions, wars, famines, pestilences and diseases" DON'T CHOOSE UP SIDES! It's MAN, who "causes" their manifestations who takes sides.

And how is God going to defeat the "effect" -- the "Four Horsemen?" By REMOVING THE CAUSE of the EFFECT! By removing SIN... by removing man's disobedience to His Commandments. Not by "writing His Laws on stone tablets" ... which is not unlike the selfish, rebellious "stony, hardhearted, stiff-necked spiritual attitude of man." No, not anything from outside of man will God do, but:

"...When the people return to their homeland, they will remove every trace of their detestable idol worship..." (Ezek.11:18 NLT)

"...And the LORD will be KING OVER ALL THE EARTH. On that Day THERE WILL BE ONE LORD - His Name ALONE will be worshiped." (Zech.14:9 NLT)

"...And I will give them SINGLENESS OF HEART and PUT A NEW SPIRIT WITHIN THEM. I will take away their HEARTS OF STONE and GIVE THEM TENDER HEARTS instead, so THEY WILL OBEY MY LAWS and REGULATIONS. Then they will Truly be My people, and I will be their God." (Zech.14:19-20 NLT)

"...this is the New Covenant I will make with the people of Israel on that Day, says the LORD: I WILL PUT MY LAWS IN THEIR MINDS so THEY WILL UNDERSTAND THEM, and I WILL WRITE THEM ON THEIR HEARTS so THEY WILL OBEY THEM. I will be their God, and they will be My people." (Heb.8:10 NLT)

Our Creator is "on our side"... He's - FOR US - working to remove the "effects" of the Four Horsemen. He's doing it by a slow developmental process of "changing man's nature" from "selfish," the nature of the flesh and the god of this world whom man now worships and obeys... to "Selfless," the Divine, Righteous, Loving Nature of the Living God.

"...let me tell you a wonderful secret God has revealed to us. Not all of us will die, but WE WILL ALL BE TRANSFORMED. It will happen in a moment, in the blinking of an eye, when the last trumpet is blown... When this happens - when our perishable earthly bodies have been transformed into heavenly bodies that will never die - then at last the Scriptures will come True: 'Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?'" (I Cor.15:51-55 NLT)

God is on "our side." And He's working on removing the "effects of the Four Horsemen" who are merely inanimate "symbols" without conscience. He's removing the "effects" of these vile, murderous Horsemen by removing the "cause" of the effects -- by changing MAN'S MORTAL NATURE!

It's man and his selfish, rebellious nature that "chooses up sides"... which in turn, makes manifest the "unfeeling, uncaring, impersonal" false political and religious beliefs, wars, famines, pestilences and diseases that plague planet earth! From the moment man's sins "cause" the manifestation of the "effects" of the Four Horsemen; the "effects" don't care about "sides" or "loyalties" or "allegiances" or "political affiliations."

The death they deal is equally distributed, globally.

How do vampires eat blood?

  1. They first have to obtain some proximity to their victim. For some this means a kissing embrace (as for the incubus and succubus), others have effected their feeding through two stories from under six feet of dirt (see the Shunned House by Edgar Allan Poe)
  2. Some go through the motions of opening their mouths to receive the stolen life-force. This is not necessary and maybe just be a reflexive reaction from more human times. Others merely open wide their eyes, or flare their nostrils, or make inviting gestures with hands and arms.
  3. They must establish some sort of rapport with their victims, a psychic link so to speak. How this is done is poorly understood but the effect of it makes for some interesting and disturbing mental effects on both vampire and victim.
  4. After feeding the vampire seems to go into some sort of ecstasy that leave it incapacitated and vulnerable for a time.

If you want another opinion take it from a real psi vampire

Most vampire feed unconsciously and don't even know that they are vampires. Others reach out to their "vamp ism' and can control their feeding by directing "tubes" from there natural energy source and connecting to a donor's.

Other vampires can feed off environmental energy, emotional energy or sexual energy.

Is it bad luck to break a crystal?

No.

Naturally occurring crystals are rarely perfect, flaws and inclusions abound, and these flaws tend to make the crystals weak at those points.
In magical work sometimes the flaws are what make the crystal unique and desirable for a specific working.
Sometimes, it just makes them more interesting and pretty to have around... Remember, not everyone uses crystals for magical work

Frequently a crystal is used for protection, if the crystal breaks, it has done its job (protected you from some harm), it might be a good idea to replace it however.

If you break one, that is not part of a charm, by accident, it is not unlucky just inconvenient. If you are a practitioner, I recommend replacing it right away (or as soon as possible) as having one (or more) available means when you are making a charm etc, you can start work immediately and not have to go in search of a new one.

If the crystal was part of a cluster, used for several things, check the "pieces" often single "points" will break free and are good for use in charms and spells. Discard all piece that are severely damaged.

If the crystal belonged to someone else, it is good form to offer to replace it.
