That's a big part of it. jpg is short for JPEG, which is the file format for photos, and realistic paintings. So yes, it's a form of lossy compression in pictures. The more compressed it gets, the worse it looks.

This would be png files as Jpeg files do not support transparency and Gif files do support animations. Png files are one of the major files which support transparency and do not support animations.

No, the JPEG format does not support animation. JPEG is designed for static images and does not have the capability to store multiple frames or animation data. For animated images, formats like GIF or APNG are typically used instead.

Windows does not exactly have it's own special format. However, It can read many formats, including JPG. No conversion should be needed to open a JPG on Windows. Since I don't know what the exact problem is, I can't be certain of what you need. However, Windows sometimes uses BMP for system image files. You can try using an online converter like online-convert (I will post a link in the "Discuss" section of this question) to change the JPG into BMP, if this is what you need. If not, try posing another question with more detail, if possible.

Any Mac software that handles graphics (Preview for example) can convert between tiff and jpg (or any of the other popular formats). For most applications you would open your tiff file and then select Save As and there will be an option to select the required Format.

Native files are the files created in the program you are in. You have the option to save your file in another format, but its best to save the file in native file if wanting to come back to edit your work. Usually, when you save as another file the quality will lack. For example when you use Photoshop (.psd) or Adobe Illustrator (.ai)or PowerPoint (.pptx). If you save the file in the incorrect format and try to access, you may not be able to view or edit.

A tiff file format is a type of image. Tiff itself stands for Tag Image File Format. It is basically the same thing as a jpeg or png image.

Open Office is capable of saving files in rich text format (.rtf). When you save a file in open office, the default is .doc but you can change it to another format if you choose to.
