You can't refinish it. Laminate is a form of plastic. I'm sorry to say, but your floor is probably ruined beyond repair. You can try to remove the shellac, but be prepared to tear out the floor instead and replace if this doesn't work. I'd try a bit of citrus-based stripper on an inconspicuous area (closet?) - it will easily remove the shellac, but might damage the finish on the floor. (Can't be any worse than what you have now, right?) The citrus-based strippers work just as effectively as harsher chemical strippers, but seem to cause less damage to other materials. I've used it successfully to remove stain and polyurethane from vinyl windows, with no damage. Once done, clean the floor well with a laminate floor cleaner or window cleaner.

No. You will be exposed to mold spores and other bacteria and germs. You must not be in any room or building that has sopping wet or even damp carpeting. The carpet must be ripped out or treated by a special company that replaces the carpet pad and dries out the carpeting after treating it with a disinfectant and mold inhibitor. If you are in a room like that you must leave it now.

Everyone in the house or apartment or duplex must get out and the professionals need to come in to inspect the place then come up with the proper way to treat not only the carpeting but the floors, walls and whatever else was exposed to the water.

So get moving out of there now. Do not take things with you that have been exposed to any form of dampness or wetness. It will depend upon what the stains are, but CLR is probably the best first choice, especially for "hard water" type stains. It is an acid, albeit fairly mild; so any finish on the terracotta, anything to make it shiny, might need re-application.

Assume that the tiles are 3 inches by 6 inches, although there is no reason to do that!

Area of each tile = 0.25 ft * 0.5 feet = 0.125 sq feet.

Number of tiles required = Total area to be covered/Area of each tile

= 210/0.125 = 1680 tiles.

That is the mathematical answer. In real life, the number required will depend on the configuration of the area to be tiled. For example, a circular area of 210 square feet will require far more tile cutting than a rectangular one - even fewer if both sides of the rectangle are in quarter of half feet. That then brings into play your tiling skills, wastage etc.

Depends on the size of the tile. Bigger the tile, the more mortar. 4x4, 4x6 wall tile, 1/8 th should be enough, 12x12 and 16x16 should be 1/4 and for anything thicker, go to the 1/2 notch trowel.

If you are positive that it is asphalt I would not suggest adhering tile directly to the asphalt. If removal of asphalt is not an option I would install a subfloor and use thinset mortar to adhere the tile. Another option (probably the better option) would be to pour a concrete mix over the asphalt. Than use thinset to install the tile. The concrete will incapsolate the asphalt. Asphalt more than likely has oils in it and can be a hazard.

You will need existing floor to be clean and dry. Layering concrete like this is called a cold joint. Concrete does not like cold joints. That I why big jobs like the cn tower and Hoover dam are all one pour basically.

If you have to do cold joints, clean base floor, rent a sacrifice tool at a rent shop, rough up the floor as much as possible, clean all dirt and dust again, cover floor with a bonding agent from a box store, pour new concrete. Over 2" is recommended.

Another way to get it to hold is to drill holes into base floor or even put various concrete screws in base floor with just the heads sticking up a little bit so new concrete can grab.

My bet will be you will find someone on the low end at about $2 per sq ft & that the depot will be $6-8 bucks a foot after they do all the add ins...

18" x 18" = 1.5' x 1.5' = 2.25 sq ft.

So the number of tiles needed = total area/area of each tile = 195/2.25 = 86.66.. that is, a minimum of 87 tiles.

That is the mathematically correct answer. In real life, though, you need to allow for breakages and wastage. This allowance will depend on your skill level and the shape of the 195 sq ft area. Some areas will require a lot more tiles to be cut or trimmed than others and all that could add to the wastage.

30 boxes should work. Ceramic tile normally come in boxes of 10, so you would need 240 tiles or 24 boxes. Then add 20%-30% more for cutting edges, corners, islands, closets, waste, and breakage. That would be 5 - 7 more boxes. But it is best to have a few on hand for future repairs.

You can use quarry tile cleaners. They can be found at any tile store or hardware store. Instructions can be found on the box. But, if you want a simple solution you can try using warm water and mop. But you may need something a little more intense to truly get it clean.
