How do you change a water pump on a 1994 Geo tracker?

Asked by Wiki User

In order to change the water pump the first step is removing the grill and then the radiator fan assembly. Once this is done the water pump is accessible it will have four bolts that must be removed in order to take out the water pump.

If you need info on R-12 HI/Lo A/c pressure gauges, you should take veh. to pro. Once you connect lines from gauges to A/C, you need to understand what the readings mean. avg. lowside @idle = 28-34, avg. Hiside = 120-130.

Hi, If youi want to pay top dollal. you can go to your GM Chevy dealer or if you have a salvage yard within a ride your'e willing to go, then call and find out if they have any Trackers there. If your local salvage yard has one, then go with a small toolbox and get one cheaply. The salvage yards have proven to be a valuable resource for me and I have to use a few of them for all I need. Good luck. Steve H.

If a 1992 geo tracker and the fuel injector is not getting any power and all the fuses under the steering wheel are good are their any fuses in the engine compartment that go to the injector?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

I had the same problem last week with my '92. I checked for spark, it had spark. I pulled the fuel line off at the throttle body and cranked for a few seconds, it had fuel. I thought injector as well. I shot starting fluid into the throttle body and it turned over. I took it to my local mechanic who diagnosed it right away. He pulled the computer out, and showed me a burned spot on the inside. He said that area controlled the fuel injection system. There are 2 fuses that you can check by taking the left speaker grill and speaker out. Just inside on the right are two fuses that you can't see from under the dash. One of those might be bad. Check all your fuses with a continuity tester if you have one. They may LOOK good, but have a small spot burned out that isn't obvious. It cost me $65 to find out the FIRST time what was wrong. I got a remanufactured ECM with a lifetime warranty for $149 plus shipping from WWW.salespartslocatingservice.net Check those 2 fuses first, and then get a pro to test it out for you.

How do you fix a squeaky odometer in your 1996 Geo Tracker?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Unfortunately... you may have to either find another from a junkyard, if they will sell it. Or have the dealership replace it. I have had mine buzz for 2 years now, being too lazy to take care of it. Last month I had the spedometer spin like a propeller and take out the gas gage. Today, the odometer stopped working. Takeing off the panels and removing the instrument panel is easy. Getting the Spedometer cable reattached is difficult. Probably have to remove most of the dash just to get my hands in there.. I've had the problem and it's especially when it's cold. I removed the instrument panel and the harness, removing the speedo cable isn't easy but if you remove the cable from underneath first, you'll be able to have enough to get ample cable up from the back, of course the grommet will proably come out from the firewall but that goes in easily especially if you spray it with PAM. After I had the instrument panel off, I lubed the inside of the cable connection on the back of the speedo and put everything back together. I used a lightweight grease that will stand up under use and heat. My speedo is now quiet. You need to be real careful when removing the cable as you can break the plastic end if you're not careful then you ned a new cable. OEM is about $100. but I've also seen aftermarket for about $20. Just have a warm day and if you haven't taken the panel off before, I heartily suggest a book and at the least patience. You can get scraped hands doing this but it's worth it. Take care and good luck. Steve H. If your not in the mood to do all that,,, who would be,,, simply remove the front left speaker, reach your hand down inside, feel the cable, about 6 inches down, round and firm, move it up or down, then drive it and see, I did it like he did, the hard way, and it didnt do anything, a few days later I remembered it was pretty close to the speaker, and decided to try again before it drove me nuts, pulled of the speaker, pushed down hard on the cable until it felt like it caught and stayed put, got in, drove, and a year later it's running fine

Why would a 1992 Geo Tracker LSI 4x4 with a new battery distributor cap and rotor crank fast but still not start?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

I just purchased a 1992 Geo Tracker and had the same problem. I had to send the ECM located underneath the dash on the right side of the steering column. I sent this to autotronixs in Houston TX and had it rebuilt (281-888-7331) the price was very reasonable. My geo cranked over great and I had fuel all the way to the fuel injector but no gas was getting to the injector. Once I got the ECM back and reinstalled it my tracker started right up. I then had a check engine light and after research there is a toggle switch up underneath the dash right above the drivers side speaker I flipped the switch and it worked my engine light turned off. 11May10The ecm is located on the left side and not the right side

My first guess would be, the timing belt broke! When you turn the key to start, the engine turns faster than normal because the valves are not opening and closing as they should. which causes a low compression situation. you.

It could also be the computer, or ECM, or whatever they call it. Its the flat black box on the firewall above and behind the pedals.I've read it is prone to break when older. When you first turn on the ignition but don't try to turn engine over, you should hear a relay click about two seconds later. That means the fuel pump has built pressure in the line and then cut off. The computer failure can disable the fuel pump or fuel injection system ... you won't hear that second click.

If you have a slow crank or no crank condition check the engine ground strap, and any wires connected to the starter. They could be corroded or loose, so check both ends.

I have a 98 tracker. My engine started making a clicking sound. My dad has worked on alot of vehicals in his lifetime. He thought it was the timining belt breaking cause the sound was coming from there. I ordered the belt in, and he took the vehical apart to replace, just to find out that the belt was okay. But I got him to replace it. I phoned around including chev and they informed me to take it in and have it checked. I live 4 hours away to the nearest place I can have it checked. I wind up taking a day off so I can take it in, I filled it up with gas and I left. On the way over there my vehical kept on losing power and dipping to 50km/h and so fourth, the engine sounded okay but it kept on doing that. A normal ride that took 4 hours took 5.5 hours with a few minutes stop in between. when it came to going up a hill, it lost power, going up at 20km/h. Well I finally made it there. The service person told me that there was a few possibilities why this would happen and I told them to do whatever they have to do to make it run properly again, they even though it might have been the catalylic converter and they were ready to make a bypass by putting in a straight pipe to the muffler, they assured me it wouldn't damage the vehical. But anyway an hour and half later, they phoned me back and told me my vehical was ready. I came to the garage and they told me that all the problem I was having turned out to be the timing and so I paid for their service and went my way. The vehical was running ok. On the way back, my vehical seemed to have more power than usual and my rpms were normal, I thought that was probably what I was having a problem with. Well after 2.5 hours of driving home, my engined just went dead. I cranked it and it cranked okay. It was minus 30 degrees celcius, I was prepared but I was there for 3 hours and luckily I was prepared by grabbing winter clothing. Well i phoned home and my dad picked me up. I got it towed to the nearest town and I went home. Three days later, the temperature was back up to plus 3 degrees and I thought my vehical had froze because it was too cold. But we towed it back to my town. I checked everything, including the gas filter and pump and distributer cab to see if there were sparks. Everything checked out. My dad removed the spark plug and put a metal thing inside to see if my valves were working and sure enough it wasn't moving. He took my front end of the engine apart cause he thought the belt was broken, it wasn't. He checked the crankshaft and here a tiny little metal pin like thing he calls a key was worn out and no longer moving the engine. He got another of this pin thingy and he replaced it along with a cement mixing compound. He put everything back together and I never had a problem. Overall, check to see if the engine is cranking properly, if not check the timing belt and if it is okay, check that pin thingy, it is located on the crankshaft pully thingy.. I know it was a long story, but I just thought I'd let you know what I went through.

The black box on the firewall is not the ECU it is the RWAL rear wheel anti lock controller. The ECU is located under the left side of the dash by the driver's left knee above the main fuse block. If you remove the speaker you can see the mounting bolts.

Assuming that you are getting fuel I doubt it is the ECU, but instead either a broken timing belt or a sheared off key-way on the crankshaft sprocket, as this is a common falure point. Check out Suzuki Forums . com

How or could you turn over an engine on a geo tracker manually?

User Avatar

If the tracker is a "standard shift" not automatic transmission. You could pop start the engine by putting the car in 1st gear, with the clutch pedal down and the ignition on. Roll the car and once car is rolling release clutch pedal. Vehicle should start, hope this is what you ment by "manually".

Differential oil geo tracker?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

It just uses standard 80 or 90 weight... I'd recommend GM Syncromesh, a synthetic oil especially for GM vehicles. It's a little more expensive, but lasts longer. And if your changing the transmission fluid in a 5-speed, I'd recommend nothing else. However, if your a bit strapped for cash, just go to your local auto parts store and ask for some 80,85, or 90-w50 (commonly called 80,85, or 90 weight). You'll need about one and a half to two quarts. I might also add that it's the same weather front or back diff. or auto or manual trans. Josh 95 Geo Tracker TBI 2x4 5-speed w/ soft top

Why did your 1992 Geo tracker 4 wd crank and then cut off and wont crank back?

crank sencer

When I had the same problem it was the starter solenoid. It is built on the starter so you have to replace both. After the starter/solenoid was replaced I had no more problems.

P.S. If you take it to most major auto parts places they can check the starter but not the solenoid mine showed good but after I replaced it I never had that problem again.
