How do you get ancient Rome on Google Earth?

Unfortunately, the 'Ancient Rome 3D' layer isno longer available as a Layer in Google Earth.

The following was the original answer when it was available in 2008. For more details see the related links section below the answer including an article with screenshots of what it looked like and a YouTube video tour.

Original answer:

  1. Check 'Ancient Rome 3D' layer under Gallery found in layers panel.
  2. Suggest to turn off '3D Buildings' layer otherwise modern buildings will be mixed in with the ancient ones.
  3. Double click on this Rome Layer to fly to Rome and start the tour.
  4. Next click on any of the Yellow Rome building icons to bring up the balloon pop-up.
  5. From the pop-up window, click on the link 'Ancient Terrain (**Load First)'
  6. Finally click on link 'Ancient Roman Buildings (5000+ buildings)'

Now you can "virtually" walk through Rome as it looked in 320 A.D to tour famous buildings in 3D such as the Roman Forum, Colosseum and Forum of Julius Caesar.

This is obviously a joke answer, but my question was serioüs,what are they?

Answer 2

These satellite images are a montage made up of literally hundreds, if not thousands, of individual photos taken in "strips" [a series of photos taken in a straight line] as a satellite passed over an area.

This one image may represent dozens or more satellite passes which occurred over a period of days or months. Later, all the individual images were merged by computer into the one which we observe.

Although I'm a layman in this field, that black rectangle appears to me to be the result of a "glitch" in the multiple images taken, and thus "missing" picture data, and as a result of NO data, that part of the final image is rendered in black by the computer system that combined the strip photos and created the final image.

Answer 2 - Additional info resulting from a comment. For miles in all directions I see no red, EXCEPT for a round red DOT to the west on the coastline. THAT red dot is a marker link to a file created by a group that made a visit to the Eqi Glacier.

The only other not white or black object is a blurred panel of images to the north and slightly east of the subject black panel(s) which appears to me not red, but instead reddish brown which is either the earth showing through the the ice, OR, it appears to me that that area was not totally covered with ice at the time the photo(s) in that section was/were taken.

What are a list of Google Maps privacy issues?

Satellite imagery viewable in Google Maps or Google Earth has some privacy concerns but the largest privacy concern is typically over Google's high-resolution street view imagery, where you have the potential to identify individuals.

Google applies "cutting-edge" blurring technology to blur faces and licenses plates on all Street View images but that is not perfect and people have to explicitly opt out to blur images further assuming they can find themselves in a given image.

Google claims that "an individual or the vehicle cannot be identified" but then has this disclaimer "if our detectors missed something, you can easily let us know".

What is the difference between Google Earth download and plugin?

Google Earth download installs both a desktop client application and a web-browser plug-in.

The Google Earth desktop client runs locally from your computer and saves its saved places or favorites to a local file. The desktop client provides many options for the user to turn on or off such as historical imagery or showing latitude/longitude grid lines.

The browser plug-in provides Google Earth as a core framework within the browser, but web sites that invoke the plug-in use the Google Earth API (JavaScript based) to customize the user interface and interaction with the data. The Google Earth plug-in will often have layers and features "hard-coded" so some options available in Google Earth desktop client are disabled or can't be turned off -- those are at the control of the author of the specific web page using the Google Earth API.

Can Google Maps read a newspaper?

The highest-resolution satellite imagery available in Google Maps cannot yet read print in a newspaper but Google's Street View could possibly read the headlines.

License plates, for example, can be seen in Google's Street View imagery so there is a detection process in place to identify and blur license plates to prevent identification of vehicles and individuals.

Newspaper print the size of license plate lettering or larger in all practical sense could be legible in Street View from Google Maps or Google Earth.

See here to see an example where you can read magazine cover titles at a newsstand in Google Earth Street View.

Which is better Google earth or Google latitude?

They're both different software with different usages.

Google earth is an earth visualizer, as well as a map, direction finder, and general combination of several useful google map utilities.

Google latitude, however, is a software commonly found on the new google phones that allows you to reveal your current location to your friends and family and to find out theirs.

It really depends on what you want to do.

How can I get a Street View image for the day before?

Google's Street View imagery is typically no newer than 6 months and often older. Because of the high quality of the imagery many people think the imagery is "real-time".

Can Google Earth be downloaded on Windows 8?

Google Earth can be downloaded on Windows 8 but more important question is whether it will run on Window 8.

In most situations Google Earth will run on Windows 8 but there are some reports of users with problems running on Windows 8 so best to try to install GE and see if it works correctly or not. Note that Google has not officially listed Windows 8 as a supported platform for running Google Earth.

If the normal download page fails to download Google Earth then try the direct download page (found in the related links below).

Also at present Google Earth is a 32-bit application so it doesn't take advantage of the all the computers memory. 32-bit apps are limited to 2 GB of memory. A future release of Google Earth v7 will most likely be more stable on Window 8 at which time Google will officially announce Windows 8 is supported
