What do guinea pigs have behind there ears?

Guinea pigs are great little rodents. They are happiest when together, and the females are nicer together than the males. I have two female guinea pigs, and they are 2 years old. Guinea pigs can live up to 6 years under proper care. They loveto eat fresh grass, and you probably shouldn't get any if you live in an apartment where fresh grass that they can graze upon is not readily available. DO NOT buy a guinea pig on impulse. You must be prepared to care for these wonderful animals, and you should read a few books on guinea pigs at your local library before buying a pair. Most books have a list of what not to feed them: follow these lists! If you have any more questions, you can email me at maxtandleot@gmail.com

How is the reproductive tract of a female pig different from that of a human female?

I would say that the main difference is the fact that guinea pigs regularly produce multiple ovum (eggs) for fertilization at the same time. This accounts for the fact that guinea pigs nearly always give birth in multiples. Though this is not completely unknown to happen in humans (twins, triplets, etc), it happens mostly due to scientific intervention.

Is it ok to breed your guinea pig at 12 months old?

Probably. But do not breed the guinea pig unless you already have stable new homes for the babies, or know that you will be taking care of the babies, and don't give them to a shelter. There are so many abandoned guinea pigs; the world doesn't need more. If you know people looking for a guinea pig, instead of breeding, suggest they look at an adoption center or shelter.

What is a guinea pig's average litter size?

It is not advised to breed guinea pigs. Because the babies are born large and ready to run, the female can double or even triple her size! Every time you breed, there is a 1 in 5 chance she will die. If you still want to breed, I have heard that 2 or 3 litters is the most she should have.

What do guinea pigs eat and how do the catch its food?

The guinea pig quietly stalks its prey. Staying in a low-lying position to stay downwind of, and out of sight from, the tasty grass stem, it is about to prey on. Then, with a quick guided motion, the guinea pig lunges forth, mouth open, teeth like razor blades, cutting through the grass quickly so that it doesn't have time to react nor escape. Another successful day of hunting.

There could be numerous reasons. he could not know where the water is. He could be not used to your water method typically guinea pigs do not drink out of bowls and they really cant because at the same time they try to breathe and they have to have there nose in the water when they drink out of a bowl because there nose is so close to there mouth and they do not like water on there nose at all! If you are using a bowl please switch to a water bottle immediently! If you are using a water bottle then he might be sick with things in the stomach suck as (parasites, worms, tapeworms, kidney problems, stones etc.) You should take him to your local exotic vet emmideently :) Hope this helped!

What are all of the sounds guinea pigs make and what do they mean?

Guinea Pig sounds is their primary means of communiation between their species;

Wheeking - Also known as 'whistling', there are four different pitches of wheeking

High, rising demanding note - Their way of expressing excitement to your presence, being fed, and hearing food package being rustled.

Slightly lower in tone - Cavies' way of greeting each other, sometimes used to find other piggies or calling for assistance when it is lost.

Even lower and "really grumpy tone" - When they doesn't want to be picked up or touched by you.

Anxious and high pitched - When a baby is separated from its mother.

Bubbling/Purring

Low bubbling - Eating contentedly through the treats left in their cage.

Bubbling - Crawling around to investigate a new place or given food.

Purring - Enjoying being held or stroked/groomed.

Rumbling

Rumbling - Dominance within a group.

Louder rumbling - Being scared or angry (sounds higher and body vibrates shortly).

Courting Rumbling (rumblestrutting) - Purrs deeply, swaying and circling the sows.

Low Rumbling - Walking away reluctantly (passive resistance).

Chutting/Whining

Heard in pursuit situations, both the pursuer and the pursuee.

Chattering

Teeth gnashing - A sign of warning, normally between two boars doing sideways 'war dance' about to go head to head (in this case, throw towels over them). If a boar do a huge yawn, it doesn't mean he is tired, it is to show the opposition his teeth so they are aware of what they are up against.

Relaxed chattering - Wants a treat but it is out of reach.

Squealing/Shrieking

The cavy are hurt or in danger, such as being picked on by another or catching a claw in the cage bars.

Chirping

Very uncommon of all the Guinea Pig sounds, you might never hear it. It is similar to bird song, it is thought to be related to stress or when a baby pigs want to be fed. I have read a theory that it is 'alarm call' used by the ancestors, thousands of years ago.

I will try to upload recorded Guinea Pig Sounds the next few months.

I hope all this have helped you to understand your Guinea Pig sounds and behavior better. It is a joy to hear them wheeking for food, my Patch bites the bars as she has no patience to wait for food to be served.

Hope this helps :)

Why do guinea pigs run on your shoulder when you are holding them?

they are trying to escape because they are scared of you....maybe they are scared of your fingers or maybe even hand!!
