It depends on where you are. In the U.S. each state has its own process. In some states (such as TN) you have to take a class first, then apply for the permit through the state. In some other states (such as MS), you don't have to take the class, you just apply. Yet in some other states, you apply through the local sheriff. Then, in two states (WI and IL) you can't get a handgun permit.

It is five years in Utah. i tried to get it sooner. I met an appeal board, showed proof that the arrest record was fraudulent in many instances. They thanked me for my time and said they would mail me their decision. It was NO!!! The two men who reviewed my evidence were both retired law enforcement officers. I could tell that they were annoyed at me when I explained that the two officers had fabricated much of the arrest record. Be that as it may, I will be eligeble in June 2011. I hate lying cops! It nearly cost me my job, and cost me about 3K total. I have lost much respect for Utah law enforcenent officers because of this.

But you may be referring to our gun laws. Canada has lots of laws when it comes to self defense and weapons. When it comes to guns they add even more laws.

Guns in Canada are controversial because those with a deep history in the land see guns as a part of our culture. Firearms were needed tools and even today fill many roles in trapping, hunting, farming and traveling. Many of our families can trace continuous gun ownership back to the 1500's and beyond.

Guns made Canada. They collected furs, fed settlers, even crushed rebellions. Guns are every bit Canadian as canoes and beavers.

But guns are not part of all Canadians cultures, particularly newer Canadians. Many who do not have guns as part of their culture, or if they do the guns play a negative role, and are feared as weapons of war or terror.

Which is why our Gun Control is a little confusing to outsiders, even to Canadians, so I won't go into all the little laws and enforcement variations.

A brief over view is that a Canadian needs to take a test, depending on the class of firearm, and get a license to posses or acquire a firearm.

There are three basic classes, Non-restricted (think shotgun/long rifle), Restricted (think handgun), and prohibited (think full auto machine gun).

So for example if you have a PAL (Possession Acquisition License) you can walk into a store and buy a shotgun and after some paperwork exchange you can leave with the gun. (I'm not going into transport and other laws)

If your license includes Restricted then you can buy a Handgun. That requires more paperwork and you will likely have to leave it at the store until it is in order. It can take a really long time, months even, but some say they can do it in a day. I've never bought a handgun in a day, there always seems to be a delay even after having worked on the approvals needed.

Prohibited guns cannot be bought or sold as the others can.

How well it is handled depends on your politics but even taking that into account most Canadians agree it is handled poorly. Every time a gang member, criminal, shoots someone in Toronto with a handgun there is an outcry to take shotguns away from Saskatchewan farmers. Judging by our crime stats the Criminals are fine with that.

I have read that guns that discharge by compressed air are not recognized as deadly weapons or guns; only those that discharge by igniting. Has anyone else found any evidence supporting this?

depends on what the conviction was for- a conviction for domestic violence disqualifies you to possess a firearm anywhere in the US- Federal law.

Added information: However, if you are referring to a permit to carry a firearm on your person, the state of Illinois does not issue permits, so no one in the state of Illinois can get a carry permit.

In most cases, you have to petition the court in order to restore your firearm rights, they don't just reappear after probation. Whether or not the local court will allow it (normally) depends on state law, the charge, and the circumstances.

The most basic answer is no. A felon cannot get a gun permit. However, under some circumstances, a felon can have his or her rights restored.

As I understand it, BB gun rifles require a firearms I.D. card to purchase. A BB gun pistol requires a 'pistol' permit to purchase. Figure it out ??????? Wonder when they will get down to assault weapons, like a baseball bat, kitchen knife, etc, etc.....

Czech gun laws require gun licence and registration of proper firearms (made after 1890, not percusion, not airguns etc..). Gun licence is "shall issue" even for selfdefense. Schools are not gun-free zones. (sidenote: CR had more ccw licences per capita than Texas in 2009)

Handguns and "evil assauls weapons" are legal for licence holders 18+ old or 21+ for self-defence.

You must have watch the news about the kid who was shot for holding a BB gun in public, You are allowed to purchase and fire a BB/Pellet gun, but can ONLY in private such as your backyard, inside of your home, or in Airsoft events. You cannot fire or show to the public, however you are permitted to carry it in public, ONLY if it is concealed somewhere and not seen by others. Police do not have permission to take your BB gun or arrest you if you are shooting it on your property, but if you shot someone and they file a complaint, then you are in trouble, Hope this Helps :)

to my understanding there is no legal definition on the books for an "unloaded firearm". however as Oregon is one of the more lenient states when it comes to firearm laws and open carry is legal in most areas of the state and there is no loaded or unloaded requirement for open carry. OK- word is strict. Your question calls for an opinion. Here is my opinion- there are several thousand national, state and local gun laws in the US. In some cases, the people that made the laws do not even understand the wording in the law they passed. Many of the gun laws do not affect criminals, since they do not obey laws- but they do affect law abiding people. Violent crime- including crimes involving guns- is at the lowest rate in years. At the same time, gun ownership has gone up. Laws that prevent honest people from being able to have a gun only takes away their ability to defend themselves from crime.
