If you are saying that at highway speeds it is running at 40 degrees celcius (and it isn't extremely cold out), I would say that your thermostat is sticking open. I know you put a new one in, but every now and again a new thermostat will either stick open or shut. If you do the work yourself, what you can do to test the thermostat is to remove it and put it in a pot of boiling water, you should see it open up. Now remove it from the water and watch it, it should close up in a short amount of time, if it doesn't you need a new thermostat. If it is working, I suggest making sure that the cooling system is completely full with no air in the system. If this doesn't work, you might want an expert to take a look at it. Hayden
Either the radiator is partially plugged and t he system has been designed marginally ( they do that to save money you know ! ) so that when the heater is turned on most of the water gets routed through the heater core, bypassing the radiator and causing overheating, or the system is just designed marginally and as above. You can put your hand on the radiator grille and feel it from the front of the car ( using all due caution, of course ) and see if there are any sudden temperature changes from hot to cold. A cold spot indicates a plugged section. The only solution to this is to replace the radiator. And/or you can also put a restriction in the line feeding the heater core, so that more water will flow through the radiator. If your car has worked well in the past with the heater turned on, then I would suspect a partially plugged radiator. I've changed these myself, and it's not hard. Make sure you don't have any other systems bonded to the radiator for cooling, like power steering, a/c , etc. Good Luck !!

The engine is flooding or the spark plug is fouled and not burning all the fuel, allowing the excess gas to seep into the oil reservoir via the piston cylinder. Cleaning or changinge the spark plug and doing a carburetor adjustment will help.

I agree that the radiator system is designed for and does the bulk of the cooling, but the motor oil circulation system does contribute by distributing and disipating some of the heat.j3h.
cooling will not be a problem. the 71 pump fits a little differently than a 77 but nonetheless bolts up the same, and obviously the alt bracket and or power steering are much different.

Because it's not a defroster button! It's just the symbol for ventilating the air into the car. It shoudln't be called a defroster since defrosting is meant by heating up the coils that you see at the back of the car. I'm pretty no car has wires in the front!

Yes it can. check the oil dip stick. if coolant is leaking inside the engine the oil will be "milky" in color.
Don't know exactly what makes a head gasket blow, but a simple quick test. with engine hot remove dipstick and drop a bit of oil on hot manifold or other hot part of engine, oil will smoke and water will sizzle. Signs of water/antifreeze in oil is an indication that head gasket is leaking

When the system is low on refrigerant the pressure switch will not allow the compressor to turn on. You may be right on the edge so it will sometimes and other times not. You need to recharge the AC.
Why does a car blow hot air when set on vent even though the outside temp is cool?
OK... Here goes- Keep this principle in mind: Heat, flows INTO cold... When you hold an ice cube in your hand, your hand gets cold because the heat from your hand is flowing INTO the clod ice cube, NOT because the cold is flowing into your hand. On this particular vehicle (like many modern vehicles), hot water from the engine flows through the heater core at all times, even when you have the A/C on or when you have nothing (A/C, heat or vent) on. The system uses a door that closes down over the air opening to the heater core to keep you from feeling warm/hot air when it is not desired. The reason(s) you feel that the vent air is warm even when the outside temperature is somewhat cool is/could be caused by the following: First, although as mentioned above, the heater core is restricted from receiving air when you are not commanding heat by the control panel, the heater core ultimately ends up as warm as the engine temperature. This is generally somewhere around 200 degrees F. Because all the air coming out of your vent(s) must pass over the door that restricts air over the heater core, and because the heater core gets so hot, some of that heat is picked up by air passing over the hot door even though it is closed. Second, the door that restricts airflow from passing over the heater core has a seal around it. After a period of time this rubber (or usually felt) seal deteriorates, allowing some air to actually pass over the heater core. Since the core is hot all the time, some of the air gets heat loaded, producing warmed air. Third, the door is operated by (in the case of your vehicle) an electric motor which responds gradually/proportionately to the setting you select on the temperature dial. If the motor gets out of calibration (can happen from time to time), if the control head has a 'glitch' and sends an incorrect signal (chronically, usually), or if the electric motor (called an actuator and contains its own little electronic 'brain') becomes faulty, the door may not be closing completely. This symptom can also be caused by a problem with the door itself, where the door gets stuck due to warping of the plastic case, a foreign object preventing it from closing (usually a pen or toy dropped into a vent or defrost opening), or a broken or cracked door hinge. Last, the vent intake opening, where the 'fresh' air comes into the car on the 'vent' setting, is located just below the windshield on the passenger side. This opening receives its air directly off of the sun-baked, engine-heated hood and because of this the air is never as cool as outside air even on a cooler night. I hope this answers your question. Many domestic vehicle manufacturers have begun installing heater control valves on their vehicles once again as they nearly all used to have. Note that the fix for most everything I have mentioned here requires removal of the dash of the vehicle or replacement of the control head and therefore is in many cases not worth the investment if it is not an extreme problem (for example, unless the system is stuck on full heat in the middle of summer. Additionally, remember that, if you so desire, manual shutoff valves can be placed in the heater hose lines (please consult a qualified mechanic as water from a vehicle can and will scald and burn you!), allowing you to manually shut off the flow of water into the heater core, thus reducing some of the heat (Readers note that certain foreign vehicles REQUIRE water flow through the heater core at all times for engine cooling and are not candidates for this procedure!). One possibility is that the engine is running too rich. When you shut the engine off with no spark present the excess fuel present from the last couple cycles is flooding the engine. This would dissipate after time. Try the idling screw first ajust until the engine is about to cut out and then turn it about 1 turn back and see how it runs.You could also adjust the Pilot screw a tinybit toward the leaner side also. If this doesnt help then the float could be slightly sticking. Of course it could be some kind of screwy grounding problem. Hope this helps.
