Do you prune watercress when it flowers?

No, watercress is not pruned when it flowers, but just before.

Specifically, the plant in question (Nasturtium officinale) flowers by the time it is 28-31 days old. Cultivators and gardeners generally opt to cut watercress back after 3 weeks. They tend to remove the top 6 inches (15.24 centimeters), save the top 4 inches (10.16 centimeters) of each plant to be used, and trim the remaining plant down to 4 inches in order to encourage multiple harvests.

What is the difference between Roman Chamomile and German Chamomile?

Roman and German chamomile are two different but closely related species. German chamomile, Matricaria recutita, is the kind normally used in herbal tea. Roman chamomile, Anthemis nobilis, can be used as an herbal tea, especially for medicinal purposes, but it is not the kind commonly consumed as a beverage.

Both Roman and German chamomile have calming properties, but Roman chamomile is more effective for irritation, impatience and feeling disagreeable, and has great value in treating PMS and other menstrual and menopausal problems, while German chamomile is superbly effective on the skin, not only to sooth and calm, but to heal and for tissue regeneration.

The Roman chamomile essential oil has a sweet, apple-like fragrance and is very light clear blue in color with a watery viscosity, while the German chamomile oil has a sweet, straw-like fragrance, is dark blue in color and its viscosity is medium.

The therapeutic properties of Roman chamomile oil are analgesic, anti-spasmodic, antiseptic, antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, anti-infectious, anti-depressant, anti-neuralgic, antiphlogistic, antiseptic, antispasmodic, bactericidal, carminative, cholagogue, cicatrisant, emmenagogue, febrifuge, hepatic, sedative, nervine, digestive, tonic, sudorific, stomachic, vermifuge and vulnerary.

The therapeutic properties of German chamomile oil on the other hand are analgesic, anti-allergenic, anti-spasmodic, antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, antiphlogistic, bactericidal, carminative, cicatrisant, cholagogue, emmenagogue, hepatic, digestive, sedative, stomachic, vermifuge, vasoconstrictor and vulnerary.

What plant herbs and flowers will withstand hot sunny conditions in window boxes?

There are dozens of plants that will do well in hot sunny window boxes. Two of my favourites are Rosemary and Nasturtium.

Rosemary is one of the most fragrant of the culinary herbs and comes in both up-right and prostrate (low growing or trailing) forms. The leaves of this plant is great in soups and pasta sauces. It loves the sun and is drought tolerant. It is however not a plant that will over winter in cold climates.

Nasturtiums are bright annuals that grow on vines, come in yellows, oranges and reds. These little plants thrive on neglect, in fact if you fertilise them you won't get as many flowers on them. Both the leaves and flowers are edible and have a crisp peppery flavour that goes well in salads.

What is square foot gardening?

Square Foot Gardening is a method popularized by Mel Bartholomew in the 1980's. Still active in the field, he has revised the original book (just found it; will buy it soon).

His basis is that garden beds should be divided in 3-foot squares by walkways. Walking on the actual beds compacts the soil, resulting in the need to till or plow the whole bed each growing season. The decision to go with 3-foot size is so the gardener can reach across the bed from any point on the edge, so you never have to step in the bed to reach.

For more detail. please read Square Foot Gardening, or the revised edition, All New Square Foot Gardening: Grow More in Less Space!

Here's the short version of my own experience with the method:

I made up two beds measuring 4 ft x 10 ft., with a walk space between the two. When preparing the soil, I tilled a purchased garden mix, compost, and sand into the clay soil, then enclosed the beds in 12" high edging.

In the 5 years I worked that garden, I never used a tiller again. Instead, I used a garden fork with 12" tines to dig up the area and turn it, forcing the fork as far below the 12" as possible. I also continued to add compost , sand, and some garden mix into the soil to add nutrients and organic material to the clay soil. Sounds like work, but not nearly as much as using that tiller was!

The square-foot gardening concept is simple: Build a raised bed, divide the space into sections of one square-foot each, and then plant vegetables (and/or flowers) in just the amount of space they need. The advantages of this system include reduced workload, less watering, easy weeding (and not much of it), and easy access to your crops. This is a great way to learn to grow some of your own food.

What are the symbiotic relationships for a foxglove?

Foxglove (Digitalis purpurea) engages in several symbiotic relationships, primarily through its interactions with pollinators and mycorrhizal fungi. The plant attracts bees and other pollinators with its tubular flowers, facilitating cross-pollination, which enhances its reproductive success. Additionally, foxglove forms associations with mycorrhizal fungi in the soil, which help improve nutrient uptake, particularly phosphorus, in exchange for carbohydrates produced through photosynthesis. These relationships contribute to the overall health and growth of the foxglove.
