No. Despite the fact that author Philip Pullman has stated that his His Dark Materials trilogy is about the killing of God, such an event does not take place in The Golden Compass(known as Northern Lights in the UK and Australia) , the first novel in that series.

It is also important to note that while the character known as the Authority does die in the final novel, The Amber Spyglass,he is neither a god nor is he directly and intentionally murdered by any characters in the series.

Instead, the Authority is revealed to have been the first angel to come into existence, who gained power by leading subsequent angels and humans to believe that he had created them. During the final battle in the novel, he is imprisoned in a crystal cube by his regent, the angel Metatron, and is found by Will Parry and Lyra Belacqua, who, seeing a crying angel inside the box, seemingly unaware that he is the Authority and not knowing that he is too weak to survive outside of the cube, use the Subtle Knife to free him from the crystal box, leading to his death.

What is the main point in The Golden Compass His Dark Materials?

Lyra Belacqua is content to run wild among the Scholars of Jordan College, with her daemon familiar, Pantalaimon, always by her side. When her uncle, Lord Asriel, returns from the North with tales of mystery and danger, it seems to have little to do with her -- even the rumor of the severed child. But his visit sets off a chain of events that draws Lyra into the heart of a terrible struggle -- a struggle that involves scientists performing hideous experiments on children, alliances with gyptians and witch clans, battles with trained mercenaries, and armored bears. And through it all, there dawns in Lyra a sense that her success or failure may mean even more than simply life or death. The first book in a planned trilogy, Philip Pullman's The Golden Compass is stunningly original, beautifully crafted, and thrillingly told. It is a masterwork of fantasy and storytelling that heralds the arrival of a classic. How do you distinguish the doctrine of religion from that which is not doctrine?

Doctrine is an amount of knowledge based on experiences and thoughts ( of it`s founders) which can guide towards other actions, thought or believes ( that may be altered by experience in one`s life) where as religion has set rules, which should not or in many religions are actually prohibited to be altered.( I could elaborate here and give you examples but it seem to me that have a computer as well:-))

Doctrine can be applied to many things (there are doctrines that are negative - meaning that not every doctrine is ok) where religion (good or bad - if there is a differentiation) only has a religious purpose (meaning how it is interpreted and acted upon within it`s religious

grounds). Doctrine doesn`t require action - religion does!

Example: Taoism, the believes of Confucius is / are thoughts and believes of this guy, though they posses a knowledge beyond normal it is very logical, understandable and practicable and doesn`t need explaining where as to religion - pick one, may need an explanation even though if read properly not much.

Doctrine suggestions usually say: " to have a good life one should......

A religious suggestions usually say: "you have to .....

where one is suggesting and the other one is kind of ordering

doctrine doesnt force you to follow as oppose to religion, even Buddhism which i believe is the most adoptable.

What does the golden compass actually do in the book the golden compass?

The Golden compass is a devise used to tell the truth. Lyra being one of the only people able to read it, can ask it a question by using the symbols on the compass, picturing the question in her mind, and the compass will respond by spinning its arrows and landing on a symbol. But every symbol has a several meanings to it. like the symbol for Woman, could mean exactly that, or a mother, or nurturing. or like a snake meaning deception. Things like that. I can not spell they exact terminology for the Golden Compass because i had loaned my series to a friend, but the actual word for the Golden compass means something like, "Truth tell" "truth Machine" "Truth Compass" If you actually read the novels, in the third novel, "the Amber Spy Glass" Lyra finds out that the Compass is controlled by Angels, that do not lie. They will answer every question truthfully. all you have to do is ask the right questions. I highly doubt Lyra ever asked the Compass to do Algebra for her though. HAhaha!
