How does the cartoonist portray the effect of the Panama Canals construction on Bogota?

In the picture there is a man which is, president Theodore Roosevelt. In there the dirt basically represent the pressure and the problems that was thrown onto the city of Bogota. Panama was previously owned by Colombia. So when the construction of the panama canal started it made Bogota face many conflicts.

How did mining lead to the establishment of new towns in the west?

Mining towns were developed to mine resources such as gold, iron, coal, etc. They were bascically for making more money, or in some cases, such as the Calif. Gold Rush, they gave an incentive to move to the mining town.

Who is polly Cooper?

Polly Cooper was an Oneida woman that played an important part of Revolutionary War. She aided George Washington and his men at Valley Forge that freezing winter of 1777-78. She brought corn to feed them and also helped the sick/wounded. She was awarded a shawl for her efforts.

December 7: Quema del Diablo or Burning of the Devil.

This event takes place in Guatemala City and involves burning an effigy of the devil. The effigy is placed on top of a large pile of rubbish collected from homes in the city and set alight to chase out demons and evil spirits just in time for Christmas.

13 - 21 December: Feast of St Thomas

This festival in Chichicastenango celebrates the saint of the city. The main attraction of the festival are dancers who perform up 30m poles dangling from ropes!
