The economy was struggling, as Hungary had to trade with the Soviet Union through Comecon on uneven terms, and often received unfair prices for their exports there. Protesters demanded free trade unions and for Hungary to develop trade links with the West.

Another reason was because of the oppressive Communist government. The leaders of Hungary often played a dictatorial rule, and used intimidation and violence to keep control. There was no freedom of speech or press, and religion was discouraged. People protested for their right to freedom of speech and free elections, for an end to the one-party system, and for Hungary to become a neutral state.

During Imre Nagy's leadership in 1953, he tried to implement his "New course". this new course included the abolishment of collectivization and allowing more individual rights. This gave Hungarians a sense of freedom, one they have imagined for so long. However, he was undermined and soon quickly replaced by hardliner Stalinist Rakosi once again.

As the Hungarian revolution occurred, the crowd demanded Nagy to be their leader, remembering the reformations that he implemented earlier. Throughout the revolution, Nagy once again made reformations such as creating a multi-party political system in Hungary and abolished the secret police force known as the AVH. In these fourteen days, Nagy brought hope and a sense of unity.

However, such "radical" reforms would not be allowed within the soviet bloc. As a result, soviet troops entered Hungary and quickly toppled Nagy's pro visionary government. He seeked refuge in the Yugoslavian embassy until he was tricked to come out by his former friend Kadar, who governed Hungary after Nagy.

Imre Nagy brought a sense of freedom from the soviets, something the Hungarians all desired. In his short term as Prime Minister, his jovial attitude and mellifluous voice won the hearts and minds of Hungarians. What he did for Hungary would be remembered for decades.

He was seen as a hero to the Hungarians. Nagy held his party faith until his death. In his last statement to the court, Nagy said "If my life is needed to prove that not all communist are enemies of the people, I gladly make the sacrifice. I know there will one day be a Nagy trial, which will rehabilitate me. I also know i will have a reburial." His reburial would come thirty one years later, the same year a democratic Hungary was born.

The river to which you are referring is the Danube. Apart from Germany, the Danube also flows through Austria, Hungary, and Romania, among others. The river then empties into the Black Sea via the Danube Delta.

The large deposits of bauxite, iron ore, and coal that were located in the western half of Hungary inside the plateaus, valleys, and hills. The minerals supported Hungary's steel and aluminum industries.

There are seven crossings in the Budapest metropolitan area, including the famous Szechenyi Lanschid, (the Chain Bridge) an early stone/chain suspension bridge which was the second permanent crossing of the entire Danube.

Not that many mountains. Mount Kékes ('Blue-like') is the highest, 1014 m high. :) Other mountains for example: Mátra (where Kékes belongs to), Bükk, Subalps, Transdanubian Medium Mountains, Mecsek. But there are two big flats, more famous than the montains :) - Little Hungarian Plain in the west, and the Great Hungarian Plain in the southeast.

Erno Rubik

The inventor of the Rubik's Cube, one of the most popular puzzles of all time. He later invented several other puzzles, some of which were very successful, but of course none can equal the monster success of his cube.

Gain? Austria lost its empire, Hungary lost 3/4 of its land. The latter one is widely considered to be the biggest loser of the war. The only gain these two had from the war is the end of the Habsburg monarchy, and their independence from a greater empire.
