Was Frantz Elementary school in new Orleans open when hurricane Katrina hit and is it open now?

Our hurricane detection and warning systems are fairly effective, and i doubt a school would be open during a highly destructive hurricane any more than a snow day.

A footnote about the fate of William Frantz Elementary.

I saw a documentary about the valiant effort of the locals rebuilding New Orleans despite little or no outside help. (Sorry, I don't remember the name of the show.) One of the buildings featured was this very school. The outside doesn't look bad, but the flood damage inside made it unusable. The school would have been torn down if not for a lady who is leading a successful effort to restore it. Her name is Ruby Bridges Hall and this school has a special meaning for her. Fifty years ago Ruby walked into the school, with four marshals acting as her bodyguards, as she became the first black child to enroll in an all white school in the south. Norman Rockwell immortalized that moment in his famous painting "The Problem We All Live With." It seems appropriate that the little girl who made the school a landmark grew up to be the woman who would save it.

Can a hurricane ever be more powerful than hurricane Katrina?

Yes. Hurricane Katrina was incredibly destructive, but it was by no means the strongest hurricane on record. At peak intensity, Hurricane Katrina has sustained winds of 175 mph and a minimum central pressure of 902 millibars (lower pressure means a stronger storm).

The position for highest sustained winds for an Atlantic hurricane is tied between Hurricane Camille (1969) and Hurricane Allen (1980), both of which peaked with sustained winds of 190 mph.

In terms of pressure, Katrina is the 6th strongest Atlantic hurricane on record. First place goes to Hurricane Wilma, with a minimum central pressure of 882 millibars.

The severity of a storm's impact is not purely a result of its intensity. In factm by landfall, Katrina had weakened to a 125 mph category 3. The incredible destruction from Katrina resulted from a combination of the storm's strength, large size, and where it hit. The major factor was the failure of the levees in New Orleans.

The eye of a hurricane is formed due to the Coriolis effect causing air to spiral inward toward the center of low pressure. As this air converges, it descends and forms a calm, cloud-free area at the center of the storm. The warm, moist air rising from the ocean fuels the hurricane and helps maintain the eye.

What is the diameter of the eye of a hurricane?

It varies widely. Some of the smallest eyes are around two to three miles wide. A normal size eye is about 15 to 30 miles wide. A very large eye can be over 60 miles wide. Generally the stronger the hurricane the smaller the eye.
