What type of data does MOV store?

In x86, a MOV instruction can store bytes (8-bit quantities), words (16-bit quantities), and double-words (32-bit quantities). In AT&T syntax, the type of data being stored is determined by a suffix at the end of the instruction:

movb - move byte

movw - move word

movl - move double-word (also called a long)

In Intel syntax - which doesn't use these suffixes - the data type is determined from context by looking at the names of the registers specified in the operands. A MOV instruction referring to %eax, for example, would store a double-word (since %eax is a 32-bit register).

Ans: In the register addressing mode the operands are in registers which reside within the CPU. Register-mode instructions are 1-byte instructions and can be executed within the CPU without the need to reference memory for operands.

But in the Register-indirect addressing mode the instruction specifies a register or a pair of registers in the processor whose contains give the address of the operand in memory. This mode uses 1-byte instructions even though the operand is in memory. Before using a register-indirect mode instruction, the programmer must ensure that the address of the operand is placed in the processor register with a previous transfer-type instruction. A reference to the register is then equivalent to specifying a memory address.

Depending on the age of your computer (the Celeron line dates back nearly 12 years), it may also simply be too slow to accomplish the tasks that you want it to do.

Next, can you replace your current CPU with a Core i7-920 in your laptop? Probably not. The laptop was designed around a certain CPU and the i7-920 is probably beyond its operational specifications in regard to the amount of power supplied for the CPU's operations, the ability to dissipate the heat generated by its operation (take note of the size of the heatsink and fan that come from the factory with the i7-920), and the fact that the desired CPU requires an LGA-1366 socket in which to mount. Most modern laptop CPUs are soldered to the motherboard and therefore not field-replaceable, most definitely not field-upgradeable. To remove the CPU that is surface-mounted requires special equipment and training, not something you can pick up in the garage or high school computer club.


The best advice that I can give you is what I give to my clients: if you want to upgrade your laptop's CPU, upgrade your laptop to a newer model. (This is also part of my issue with game consoles: the technology inside them is "stuck" at that level until a new console comes out to supersede it. Glory be to desktop computers!)
