What is a French pearl?

I've been seeing "french pearl" listings on Ebay recently and, being a veteran at this, my best guess is that it's a way of saying it's a fake (i.e. "faux") pearl.

How to work harden silver wire that is to be made into brooch pin?

You can purchase hard tempered silver wire for these types of applications. However, if you wish to work harden soft wire, first shape it into the desired configuration and then lightly hammer the wire while turning it to ensure even application of force. Continue to do this for a few moments and you will find that the wire hardens due to the stress placed on the material. The more you bend, hammer and shape wire the harder it will get. It will eventually reach a breaking point where it becomes brittle and can snap so don't take it too far!

What can I make with buckeyes?

Here is a site for an idea:

(excerpt)

Buckeye GarlandI think buckeyes are really pretty, and I got an idea to make them into a garland for my fireplace mantel. I got 50 jumbo buckeyes from a gentleman selling them on eBay, used mono filament for string (it's in the jewelry section at the crafts store), and in between each of the buckeyes, I strung on four 4mm silver beads. In the picture below, I also show some tiny blue beads, but they were too small to be threaded on with the needle (regular sewing needle)

I made a beautiful wreath. I started with a spiral twig/grapevine wreath that I found at Hobby Lobby for $7.50. I wanted to add a ring of buckeyes near the center of the wreath. I collected about 25 good buckeyes and poked holes in each side of the buckeyes with a hammer and nail. This allows the moisture within to release itself (otherwise the Buckeyes will mildew, shrink and become lopsided). Next, I ran green craft wire through the buckey and wired each to the wreath. Since the circular pattern I was making seemed a bit out of perfect order, I used a hot glue gun to hold them better into place. Hold each for about 30 seconds into place where you want them, until the glue dries. Once the circle was completed, I clipped wheat (dried flower section of store) into 7 inch long pieces. I then inserted them in a spiral fashion into the grapevines, and secured with a tiny dot of glue from the hot glue gun. I added a bronze colored silk wire reinforced ribbon, woven throughout the wreath. I then glued a long dangly/crinkly bow with ribbon streamers at the bottom. The end result was stunning! The contrast of the light colored wheat, the dark buckeyes and ribbon worked perfectly. I stayed with as much natural adornment as possible. If the buckeyes loose their shine, you can always spray then with Helman's Indoor/Outdoor Polyeurathane (any Wal-Mart sells this in a spray can for about $8.). This will protect everything outside, if you choose to hang the wreath on your door.

How do you get diamonds out of rings?

You might be able to pry the stone out of the setting. A better idea would be to take the ring to a jeweler and ask the jeweler to remove the stone in a way that will best preserve the setting.

Is emerald a mineral if so why?

Emeralds are a variety of the mineral beryl colored green by trace amounts of chromium and sometimes vanadium. Some people actually prefer an emerald with very minute flaws over a flawless emerald, as this proves authenticity of the stone. A mineral is a naturally occurring solid formed through geological processes that has a characteristic chemical composition, a highly ordered atomic structure, and specific physical properties. To be classified as a true mineral, a substance must be a solid and have a crystalline structure.

Does the word jewellery come from 'Jew'?

No. The word Jewelry, or rather, the root jewel, comes from Old French jouel, which seems to relate to jocale, a Medieval Vulgar Latin word meaning "that which causes joy". Curiously, this puts it as a relative of joke, from the same origin. There are other theories about Jewel, but none touch on Jews and all trace back to different Latin words.

Where can you buy jewelry scrap gold?

You can find scrap gold on auction websites, and maybe in the "for sale" section of your local newpaper or online classified ads website. However, you will probably pay more a premium (more than it's actually worth) through any of these channels. Instead, if you know what you are doing or are willing to find out, you can buy scrap gold at a substantial discount (25-40%) from the public. Then you can keep it as an investment or resell it for a profit.

Why do some jewelers display gold as 18 c and other jewelers display gold as 18 k?

Generally, 18c jewelry originates in the UK- simply different spellings! In USA we spell the gold content "Karat" in UK it's "Carat". Though, I believe generally it's 18CT rather than 18C.

What's a good engagement ring?

I personally would want one that has symbolic meaning, so that really is up to the couple, I met a couple at the Grand Canyon who had their wedding rings made and they were matching gold bands in the shape of a scarab and on the inside a private inscription that had to be the the most unique wedding bands I've ever seen.

So bottom line their is not a right answer to this question, some like the diamond quality and size and traditional style others make get theirs tattoed on so just have fun and be happy and be honest with your likes or dislikes, good luck!

What is a torch wrench?

# If you mean "torque" wrench, that's a tool to assist a mechanic to accurately tighten a bolt to a pre-determined torque. Torque is the twisting force. If you over-torque bolts they will fail, if you UNDER-torque them, they will work loose. # If you really mean "torch wrench", that's a term some guys use in difficult situations. "Ah, nuts, I can't get that rusted bolt to come off so I'll just use the torch wrench" Sometimes it's called a "hot wrench" or whatever other euphemism the mechanic is accustomed to, but it's basically an acetylene torch with a cutting tip.

What does a baron cut diamond look like?

Mixed cuts share aspects of both (modified) brilliant and step cuts: they are meant to combine the weight preservation and dimensions of step cuts with the optical effects of brilliants. Typically the crown is brilliant cut and the pavilion step-cut. Mixed cuts are all relatively new, with the oldest dating back to the 1960s. They have been extremely successful commercially and continue to gain popularity, loosening the foothold of the de facto standard round briliant. Among the first mixed cuts was the Barion cut, introduced in 1971. Invented by South African diamond cutter Basil Watermeyer and named after himself and his wife Marion, the basic Barion cut is an octagonal square or rectangle, with a polished and faceted girdle. The total facet count is 62 (excluding the culet): 25 on the crown; 29 on the pavilion; and 8 on the girdle. This cut can be easily identified by the characteristic central cross pattern (as seen through the table) created by the pavilion facets, as well as by the crescent-shaped facets on the pavilion. A similar cut is the Radiant cut: It differs in having a total of 70 facets. Both it and the Barion cut exist in a large number of modified forms, with slightly different facet arrangements and combinations. * http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diamond_cut Other sites with more visuals:
