Is there college for Lapidary?

There are a few different possibilities; I'd suggest the GIA courses to learn gemmology. There are also specialized diamond cutting courses available. Talk to your friendly local gem and mineral club to find out if they offer courses or know who does. Most lapidaries are self taught; if you understand how different grits of sandpaper are used to smooth wood, going from coarse to fine, you can pretty much figure out how to cut and polish minerals on your own using diamond machinery.

Lapidary orange peel effect how to fix?

This is typically a gem polishing problem and can have varying fixes. Read up on the particular stone and change your polishing method; eg. you may have to switch from aluminum oxide on canvas to fine diamond on a hardwood wheel, or you may have to pay closer attention to heat. A more specific question will enable a more specific answer.

How do you use water glass for lapidary dopping?

Water glass, or sodium silicate, is a white powder that is dissolved in water to form an adhesive. I'd suggest following the instructions on the package. Ensure that the stone to be dopped is clean and free of oil, as is the dop, and ensure that both surfaces are flat.

What is the compound used in white jewelers rouge?

In actual fact, there is no such thing as 'white' or 'green' jewelers rouge.Proper jewelers rouge is red,the 'rouge' is french for red,it should always be red.The 'white' and 'green' compounds on the market are much coarser abrasives, nowhere near as fine as proper red jewelers rouge, and not really recommended for polishing soft metals such as gold, silver, chrome etc.

How do you get cat urine and cat urine smell off Jewelry making supplies without rusting it or spending a lot of money?

If repeated washing with soap and water doesn't do the trick, I'd put everything into a sealable box or bag and dump in a whole pile of baking soda, leave it alone for a week. It that doesn't work, try peroxide. If that doesn't work, there are a ton of commercial products available, but little info on their efficacy; eg. Nature's Miracle, Diaper Pure, Urine-Off. Personally, if the supplies didn't cost that much, I'd just chuck 'em.

How to work harden silver wire that is to be made into brooch pin?

You can purchase hard tempered silver wire for these types of applications. However, if you wish to work harden soft wire, first shape it into the desired configuration and then lightly hammer the wire while turning it to ensure even application of force. Continue to do this for a few moments and you will find that the wire hardens due to the stress placed on the material. The more you bend, hammer and shape wire the harder it will get. It will eventually reach a breaking point where it becomes brittle and can snap so don't take it too far!

What can I make with buckeyes?

Here is a site for an idea:

(excerpt)

Buckeye GarlandI think buckeyes are really pretty, and I got an idea to make them into a garland for my fireplace mantel. I got 50 jumbo buckeyes from a gentleman selling them on eBay, used mono filament for string (it's in the jewelry section at the crafts store), and in between each of the buckeyes, I strung on four 4mm silver beads. In the picture below, I also show some tiny blue beads, but they were too small to be threaded on with the needle (regular sewing needle)

I made a beautiful wreath. I started with a spiral twig/grapevine wreath that I found at Hobby Lobby for $7.50. I wanted to add a ring of buckeyes near the center of the wreath. I collected about 25 good buckeyes and poked holes in each side of the buckeyes with a hammer and nail. This allows the moisture within to release itself (otherwise the Buckeyes will mildew, shrink and become lopsided). Next, I ran green craft wire through the buckey and wired each to the wreath. Since the circular pattern I was making seemed a bit out of perfect order, I used a hot glue gun to hold them better into place. Hold each for about 30 seconds into place where you want them, until the glue dries. Once the circle was completed, I clipped wheat (dried flower section of store) into 7 inch long pieces. I then inserted them in a spiral fashion into the grapevines, and secured with a tiny dot of glue from the hot glue gun. I added a bronze colored silk wire reinforced ribbon, woven throughout the wreath. I then glued a long dangly/crinkly bow with ribbon streamers at the bottom. The end result was stunning! The contrast of the light colored wheat, the dark buckeyes and ribbon worked perfectly. I stayed with as much natural adornment as possible. If the buckeyes loose their shine, you can always spray then with Helman's Indoor/Outdoor Polyeurathane (any Wal-Mart sells this in a spray can for about $8.). This will protect everything outside, if you choose to hang the wreath on your door.
