What does laser eye surgery feel like?

Not at all. The actual surgery process is a little uncomfortable but not painful at all. Your eyes are fully anaethatised with drops.

Immediately after surgery, your eyes will feel a little gritty and watery but this wears off after a couple of hours. It is advised you go to bed when you get home to rest your eyes and help healing.

I had Lasik last Saturday and was back at work Monday morning with 20/20 vision and no irritation.

A2: I just had lasik today at three pm and it's now 6:30pm. It's surprisingly no pain for what they do. everyone's different but for me, it's hard to keep my eyes open just to type. the doctor just called me and said to try and fall asleep. he said my vision should be perfect by 8:30 tonight. Right now though, it looks like I'm looking through Saran Wrap or something. and the drops they give you really help :}

Another answer

I had laser eye surgery because I'm borderline glaucoma. My doctor was hoping it would bring down my eye pressure but we we not successful. I would say no pain was felt but I did feel a percussion sometimes in one eye and became nauseated, my doctor had to stop for awhile, that was the only problem and not really a problem.

How can you correct your vision without lasik or glasses?

Besides the traditional glasses and contacts, there are a couple of other options. Before laser surgery, there was radial keratotomy, but it isn't used that much anymore. It involves actually cutting the cornea to reshape it. There is a new procedure called Intacs that entails implanting the micro-thin intracorneal rings into the cornea by a trained eye surgeon. Implantable contact lenses, known as phakic intraocular lenses to ophthalmologists, are presently being investigated and utilized as another refractive procedure. There is also a procedure called orthokeratology, commonly referred too as braces for eyes. Your eye is reshaped by using hard contacts. You have to wear a "retainer" for a few hours each day to maintain the correction.

What is the cost of Lasik eye surgery?

Average LASIK costs are:

  • $2,150 for all laser-based vision correction procedures (including LASIK) in which a single price is quoted.

  • $1,580 for non-customized LASIK using a bladed instrument (microkeratome) and excimer lasers that are not guided by wavefront analysis.

  • $2,170 for wavefront-guided LASIK using a laser-created flap.

Does Medicare cover dental?

Medi-Cal covers some level of dental service for virtually every Medi-Cal recipient. The level depends on the category of aid the person is receiving. Most children are eligible for a pretty comprehensive range of services, including exams, x-rays, preventive services like fluoride applications and dental sealants, fillings, extractions and, in some cases even orthodontics.

Fewer services are available to most adults because of budget cuts implemented in July 2009. Most adults are limited to services for the relief of pain, trauma or infection, e.g., extractions, sedative fillings. Pregnant adults are eligible for some preventive services and some periodontal (gum) treatment, but not fillings. Most adults who reside in nursing facilities are eligible for the same full scope of services as most children.

Why are your eyes red in pictures?

You are actually seeing images of the retina, the layer of cells at the back of the eye. There are many blood vessels in that part of the eye, as well as a very high concentration of light receptor cells.

You will note that in virtually every photo in which you see 'red eye', the photographer used a flash. The flash was probably on the camera, making it possible for light from the flash to make a reasonably direct trip from flash to retina and back to the camera. The need for the flash suggests that the ambient light level is low enough for the subjects' irises to be open. The flash and exposure happen so quickly that the iris doesn't have time to adjust by closing a little. The result is the slightly creepy effect that we call red eye.

This is why most cameras today have a pre-flash option for photos of people and/or animals. A few short bursts of light cause a person's irises to close a little, and red eye is almost always avoided. If this option is not available with your camera, then placing the flash at an angle, away from the camera, may also help reduce red eye. The problem can also be fixed easily with most photo editing software packages.

What is best lasik equipment?

If you ask 10 different doctors you will probably get 5 different answers to that question. Therefore keep in mind that this answer is personal and based on 15 years experience in LASIK technology, working as a LASIK consultant, and from one of the only doctors who ever developed a laser specifically for LASIK and had it FDA approved and then used it to treat thousands of patients (The Dishler Excimer Laser).

Currently I believe that the best excimer laser in the world is the MEL 80 made by Carl Zeiss Meditec. The reasons for this are many but in summary are based on three factors. First and most importantly are the results. As a clinical investigator for this company, and with using the product post approval it has produced the best clinical results (% of patients who see 20/20) of any laser I am familiar with. Second, it works by producing a custom optimized ablation pattern, which means it does not change the natural prolate shape of the eye as much as other laser systems which gives more natural vision and less distortions and greater satisfaction. Third, it is a robust system that is easy to calibrate, has dual eye trackers, and many features that make it technologically superior. My second favorite laser is the Wavelight Allegretto, which was designed by engineers/scientists who originally worked at Zeiss, and incorporates many of the same features. This laser is currently approved for a wider range of indications in the US market which is desirable.

The other part of LASIK is making the flap, and I believe that a femtosecond laser is essential for this critical part of the procedure. Many centers still use mechanical microkeratomes, but this is the part of the procedure where complications can occur and are much less likely with femtosecond technology. The original femtolaser is the Intralase and this is a reliable and good piece of equipment. Even better is a femtosecond laser also made by Zeiss called the VisuMax. The VisuMax runs at much lower energy, at a higher treatment rate, and treats the natural curvature of the eye rather than flattening it like most of the other femtolasers do. It has many other technological advances as well.

Therefore, my first choice is the combined workstation of the VisuMax and the Mel80 for LASIK and my second choice would be the Intralase and Allegretto combination.

Other lasers utilize older "broad beam" technology which has been improved but are not as advanced as the types described in this answer. Many doctors are very satisfied with their results, but there has been a trend in the last few years towards the types of systems described here.

My Answer

Traditional Lasik that uses handheld cutting tool (called microkeratome) is still popular among Lasik surgeons and continues to help thousands of people improve their eyesight. However, more sophisticated eye surgeons prefer using a special femtosecond laser to create corneal flaps during blade free Lasik (IntraLasik) due to the proved higher precision of this new technology. This modern technology allows the surgeon to analyze and get a detailed map of patient's eye optical system. My main point is that your surgeon's experience and skill level will be the most significant factors influencing your surgery outcome.

Is lasik eye surgery an inpatient or outpatient surgery?

Lasik eye surgery is considered an outpatient surgery because the patient is allowed to go home on the exact same day. You will still have to treat your eyes with drops and avoid to much light but you will get to go home.

What are the main reasons why people are choosing to have lazer eye surgery?

How likely is it for a flap to move several months after lasik eye surgery?

It is extremely unlikely for the flap to move several months after LASIK surgery, but it is possible to dislodge it with severe trauma. In the last 15 years and about 50,000 LASIK cases we have only seen a small handful of cases with late flap dislocation. These were almost always the result of severe trauma such as a tree branch directly contacting the cornea, and would have caused some degree of injury. Fortunately, we have been able to repair these cases successfully with little or not permanent loss of vision.

It is for this reason that the military and some law enforcement branches had required PRK or surface treatment rather than LASIK due to potential combat situation. It is an indication of how rare these occurrences are that LASIK is now accepted by most all of the categories previously mentioned.

We counsel all LASIK patients to wear eye protection for a minimum of six months, and it is not a bad idea for everyone to do this when there could be damage of the eye. It takes a special kind of trauma to dislodge a well healed LASIK flap, and if the vision does change after a trauma, it is best to have the eye checked right away.
