Rhode Island was the first British colony in North America to guarantee its citizens the right to worship as they pleased. Roger Williams was banished from Massachusetts because of his belief in the separation of church and state. He went against the laws of church leaders in Massachusetts and proclaimed that no one could determine who was "saved" and there must be no religious test, such as the one enforced in Massachusetts, to determine who would have the right to vote and participate in other civil affairs. Williams believed that whether one was "saved" was a personal matter between the individual and God. In 1636, Williams purchased land from the Narragansett Indians (known as Providence) and founded the colony of Rhode Island. In 1644 he sailed to England and secured a charter for his colony. The idea of separation of church and state and complete freedom of religion would later be incorporated in the Constitution of the United States. MrV

The goals of the Maryland colony was to allow the colonists to make a living without discrimination due to their Catholic faith. In England, Catholics were denied rights for failing to loyal to the Church of England.

Lord Baltimore was a Catholic. therefore, when he founded Maryland, it was legal to be a Catholic there, unlike the other colonies. You had to belong to the state religion of England (Anglican) or the Puritan church. Therefore Maryland was a safe haven for Catholic immigrants to the New World, for a while at least.

Back then and still today it's considered an agricultural state, if you lived outside of a big city you grew crops and raised cattle. Regardless, women always took care of the home and children. In Maryland and a lot of other southern states, you can see this lifestyle as a way of living in the country.

On 22 May 1775 the New York Provincial Congress declared itself free from British rule and it was first called the State of New York in 1776 and ratified the New York State Constitution in 1777. The colony was named Maryland for Queen Henrietta Maria (1609-1669), wife of Charles I (1600-1649).
