2002 Mazda Protege 5 hesitates on take off and idle?
There could be a few things wrong with the car but I own a 02 Mazda Protege ES and here are some things that I have gone through with mine. The EGR valve was recalled on these cars so that may cause the issue and may need to be replaced. Also I have had problems with the ignition coils in the car going bad and that causes the car to run rough and hesitate. I am replacing my second set of them with OEM coils as the cheap set I put in only lasted one year. If you leave the ignition coils go too long it can foul your catalytic converter eventually and that can cost a few hundred bucks to replace. If you don't have a check engine light on try some fuel injection cleaner and run a couple tank fulls of premium fuel and see if it might be a clogged injector. If the check engine light is on take it to a Autozone and they can pull the code for it, if the code shows P0301 Random Misfire that is the same code I had and replacing the coils fixed that issue. The best winter settings are defrost, external air flow and hot temp. In warmer, rainy weather, the best settings are is defrost, external air, comfortable temp, and A/C on. The A/C is necessary to dry the external air but is not needed in wintry conditions, becase the air already has very low moisture content (even when snowing). The biggest mistake that folks make is having internal air circulation turned on. In this setting, humidity from your breath builds up. Even heating this air will eventually become ineffective.

I've recently managed this on my 1999 demio. You need to unscrew the screw at the top of the rear light array (Philips-type screwdriver). This loosens the light array at the top, just enough for you to get your fingers behind it. Lower down, there are two lugs which secure the bottom of the light array. With a bit of jiggling the lugs will disengage, releasing the whole array - during this process, it feels as though the lugs are going to snap off!! Once the light array is in your hands, just twist the plastic holder of the bulb you want to change anticlockwise, remove the bulb (same fitting as a bayonet domestic bulb) and reverse the process to re-install. ...replacing the taillights is a piece of cake. Open you hatch and there are 3 small round covers that pop out that reveal 3 bolts. Unscrew those with the utmost care so you dont drop them into the care. pop the taillight out, swap in the new reverse steps 2 and 1.
I would add that if you're replacing the passenger side bulb, you there are only 2 small round covers, the third screw is inside the storage for the jack. Also, popping the assembly out to access the bulbs might require a little more force than expected; as long as you have unscrewed the three bolts, do worry about breaking it--it will pop off.

Open the front passenger door. There will be a white label on the b pillar. This label will have the engine displacement. It will either be 1500 for 1.5L engine or 1800 for the 1.8L engine. Open up the trunk pull back the fake wall you will see the release cable attached to the release tab...very easy fix...
