Mechanical Engineering

Mechanical Engineering is a branch of engineering that encompasses the generation and application of heat and mechanical power and the design, production, and use of machines and tools. Mechanical engineering involves application of the principles of dynamics, control, thermodynamics and heat transfer, fluid mechanics, strength of materials, materials science, electronics, and mathematics.

Which is better 350 hp 400 tq or 400 hp 350 tq both engines being 425 wt?

350 hp 400 tq hp means nothing it is just what the engine is rated at. torque is the actual measure of power

Who invented the modern submarine?

The modern submarine was invented by John Phillip Holland. He callled it the Holland 1. He tested it in the passaic river in Paterson , New Jersey. Before inventing that he was a teacher in St. John Catholic school.

Effect of pre ignition on engine?

,

Pre-ignition (sometimes called knocking or pinking) is when the fuel is ignited before the desired point in the cycle of the engine.

That is not just before tdc on the cycle, because alost every engine begins ignition momentarily before tdc, and as the engine speeds up - even further before.

In essence pre-ignition is an undesired ignition of fuel vapours which has the effect of slowing down the piston as it rises towards top dead centre.

Because it ignites before the proper time, it can damage the piston surface, cause wear in the bearings/gudgeon pin/little end, big end bearings or cause extra wear on the piston skirt or cylinder bore.

The other place pre-ignition can cause damage is on the valve seats/valve head.

Either way the engine has problems. It could be an advance issue (mechanical - distributor or electronic sensor - most modern engines have a pre-ignition sensor), bad fuel blend (too high octane), it could be as a result of a carbon build up in the head/valve area (which can cause a hot spot - a source of ignition for the incoming fuel)

If it's a modern car - get the pinking sensor checking at your local garage, if its an old car with a mechanical distributor - check the timing.

What is wire welding?

A form of arc welding in which the electrical energy used to weld the metal is conducted through a wire that is fed from a spool to act as a filler metal.

What is metal use for?

Metal is used for almost everything from cooking, transportation, medical equipment, weapons, parts of hardwares, structures in houses/buildings, industrial equipment, and more.

Is bending pipe different than tube bending?

This depends on the thickness of the pipe in question. When bending tubing and pipe one wants to keep the inner diameter consistent through the bend. That's what tube bending kits are designed to do. Exhaust pipes ( wich are thin ) are bent in the same fashion as tubes, only the machines are larger. You can see this if you visit a local muffler shop. If the pipe is thick walled the pipe must be heated to bend it, and then annealed. This process utilizes heavy hydraulic driven machinery. Mandrel bending is a system wich uses two heavy wheels the pipe is fed through. Sand bending is a shade tree mechanics technique where the pipe is packed with dry sand and then heated and bent by hand.

Why is a transformer used?

To step up or step down a particular voltage using the principle of electromagnetic induction. This is a potential transformer.

Transformers are also used to step up or step down current. Current transformers are used extensively in instrumentation applications.

Current and voltage are inversely proportional.

What is grooving in lathe definition?

Grooving in lathe machining refers to the process of creating a narrow, straight, or contoured groove or channel on the surface of a workpiece. This is typically achieved using a specialized tool called a grooving tool, which can cut into the material to form the desired shape. Grooving is often employed for various applications, such as creating space for O-rings, enhancing part functionality, or preparing surfaces for subsequent machining operations. It is a precise operation that requires careful tool selection and setup to ensure accuracy.

What is spur gear?

A Spur gear is a gear and it can change the speed and direction of motion. You have to shift your gears in order to make your gears work. If you don't know how to, ask google or ask Wiki answers for a better answer on what to do. Remember, all gears need to be shifted at a certain period of time.

Why rupture strength is preferred to ultimate rupture strength?

Ultimate strength is used for materials that yield before breaking, like metals; rupture strength is for materials that break suddenly, like glass. Ultimate rupture strength would imply some yield strength before finally breaking and is not a preferred term for brittle materials like glass.

What is a Pfeiffer damper?

It is a vibration dampener. A primary application for the device is to reduce vibrations in pumping systems.

What is the equivalent material to 35NCD16?

The equivalent material to 35NCD16 is often considered to be AISI 4340 steel. Both materials are low alloy, high strength steels that contain nickel, chromium, and molybdenum, making them suitable for applications requiring high toughness and strength. While 35NCD16 is commonly used in Europe, AISI 4340 is more widely recognized in North America. Always consult specific material property standards for precise applications.

What are some limitations of a career in mechanical engineering?

The only limitation for a Mechanical Engineer is the sector he chooses to work in. e.g. there are many sectors in mechanical engineering such as: automobile, air-conditioning, thermal, production, manufacturing, fabrication, erection, maintenance, quality, design, etc. Amongst these sectors there are some which can be classified further.

So, if an engineer is working in any of the above sectors for years and he changes his job or sector then he would be considered as a newbie somehow new for that new sector. This is the only limitation for engineers. Another limitation is it is not a white collar job. If you expect you will always work in office in air conditioned room then this job is not suitable for you. You have to work outside in the office sometimes in noisy and dirty environment.
