Are you sure its not a 1998? I don't know if the SLK was made in 1997? Anyways, Mercedes do not use cam belts, they use chains. Chains hold up much long then belts do, I don't know if any mileage or years to replace the chain, but you really should not have to unless it starts to make excessive noise.

Code usually means there is a bad mass air sensor. Replace sensor and code resets. Make sure the car has clean air filter and filter box is also clean.

Mercedes Benz SLK 230's engine will start cutting out at rpm's above 4k if the car is in park. This is a self preservation safety feature.

using car maintainer,,,, There is a big difference in a regular Battery Charger and a Battery Maintainer. A Maintainer will keep a battery charged and can be connected full time without overcharging. The usual Battery Charger is for intermittent use at times when your battery is so weak that it must be recharged in a short time, then disconnected from the charger to keep it from overcharging. A good Maintainer can not overcharge.

To change the clock you have to use the menu on the steering wheel. I don't remember which mode but toggle thru and it will ask the date, time of day then once you ok it, it will fix the analog as well as the digital.

I prefer some of the synthetics , brands like Castrol, Mobil, Valvoline, Motul are really good.Now a days there are differents densities for the temperature of the place where the care are running. Those brands had made oils with a very wide range of densities and those tolerates a very high or very low temperatures. Some of the goes from 0 W-30, 10W-40 and so on. Electronic Stability Program.Helps balance the car in case a quick swerve .If light is on it could effect the handling in case a sudden stop or swerve or on a wet road .Mercedes is a fairly good car ,but American Mercedes service is not reputable.My local small town mechanic is by far more trustworthy and cheaper.My experience with multiple Mercedes dealer is they either neglect or overservice by replacing items that maybe did not need replaced and not fixing the real problem .I put the trust of a dealer service in my daughter's car ,which had a severe problem with hydroplaning.After $3000.00 in repair it still had the same problem .I considered it a emergency to get her out of the car .I traded a cash for clunker 1986 dodge truck for a Volvo s40 and hauled the c230,400 miles back .The car had hydroplaned once and she hit a curve.It apparantly knocked the frame out of line .I am in the process of getting this corrected .Sorry I got carried away.Back to esp.The esp light has been on most of the cars life .Make sure all ball bearings and the stuff that wears out at 100,000 miles are in good shape or replaced .That was part of the $3000.00 I spent .The dealer can get the code for this.Mine read as a rear stabality control module .This is located under the trunk in the middle ,the part is around $400.00 .They make a lot of parts for your safety ,in my experience if these malfunction or need replaced,the car can be very hazardous to drive ,so its best to get repaired by your trustworthy mechanic.I will never own another Mercedes after my experience with this c230.and it has had it's regular visits to dealer for maintenence ,and the odometer sometimes works,but the day I tried to trade they only offered me $2800.00.I will keep it myself and me and my local mechanic will repair what we can .You have to have a special key ,just to check tran.fluid .I probable said to much but maybe something is in here that can help someone else or maybe save a life.
