The Kola Superdeep Borehole was begun in 1970 and finished in 1992. It reached 12,262 meters deep. Work ceased due to the difficulties of drilling in extreme temperatures (~300 degrees Celsius) and lack of funding.

Iron ore consists mostly of oxygen and iron atoms bonded together into molecules. To convert these oxides of iron to metallic iron, they must be smelted or sent through a direct reduction process to remove the oxygen. The carbon dioxide byproduct goes off into the atmosphere and what is left is almost pure iron.

I don't think that is what the terminology 'direct reduction' means in this context. For a start most directly reduced iron (DRI) is produced using CO and H2 produced from natural gas. I think the correct meaning is that 'direct reduction' is called direct because it directly produces iron (as a solid sponge because iron has a high melting point - see the 'bloomery process' for producing wrought iron), while the indirect process produces iron via 'pig iron' which is a high carbon alloy of iron (produced as a liquid because of the reduction in melting point caused by the carbon - see 'Osmond' process).

The Oak Ridge facility was the location of the big enrichment program put together by the U.S. in World War 2. It is now the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and it is located in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Need links? You got 'em.

Bauxite is not a metallic substance. It is an ore composed mainly of aluminum hydroxides, with various impurities such as iron oxide and silica. When refined, bauxite is used to produce aluminum metal.
