Moons and Natural Satellites

Natural Satellites, also know as moons, are natural celestial bodies revolving around a bigger object like a planet or a dwarf planet. Some famous natural satellites are our Moon (Luna), Ganymede, Europa and Titan.

601 Questions

How are natural satellites formed?

Natural satellites are formed through various processes, such as gravitational capture, co-accretion, or collision. For example, moons can be captured in a planet's gravitational field, formed alongside their planet from the same material, or created through the collision of a planet with another celestial body, resulting in debris that forms a moon.

Who discovered Titania and oberon?

Titania and Oberon are two of the five major moons of Uranus. They were discovered by William Herschel in 1787.

How old is Triton?

Defining the age of a moon is very difficult, especially Triton.

Because Triton is more than likely, a captured KBO (Kyper belt object) it can be said to be part of the original formation of the Solar System at about 4.6 billion years old.

However, it's surface is relatively young - in astronomical terms - with regions varying from 50 million years old to just 6 million years old.

I think a lot depends on "what" part of Triton!

What are modern space facilities tools and equipment used to study the universe?

Modern tools and equipment used to study the universe include optical telescopes, radio telescopes, space telescopes, the electromagnetic spectrum, many branches of science including paleontology, physics, chemistry, biology, etc., computer science and much much more. For more about tools and equipment used in astronomy, see the related links.

What are Saturn's moons named after?

The modern names for the moons of Saturn were suggested by John Herschel in 1847. Naming them after mythological figures associated with Saturn - the Roman god of agriculture and harvest. The then known seven satellites were named after Titans and Titanesses, brothers and sisters of Saturn. In 1848 Lassell proposed that the eighth satellite of Saturn was named Hyperion after another Titan.

When in the 20th century the names of Titans were exhausted, the moons were named after different characters of the Greco-Roman mythology or giants from other mythologies. All the irregular moons (except Phoebe) are named after Inuit and Gallic gods and after Norse ice giants.

Why is the eclipse only visible from certain areas?

That's because a solar eclipse is caused when the Moon gets between the Earth and the Sun, blocks the Sun's light when viewed from Earth, and casts a shadow on Earth's surface. The Moon's shadow on Earth's surface is very small, and the moon only aligns with the Sun when viewed from a small area, so a total eclipse only happens for a very small region. If you're outside that shadow, the sky won't go dark, and the Moon won't completely block the Sun's disc, but you will see the Moon cover at least part of it.

A lunar eclipse, on the other hand, is visible across the entire night side of Earth.

How many satellites are there on the planet Uranus?

There are no satellites on the planet Uranus. As of 2014, Uranus has 27 known satellites, or moons. The five major moons are Miranda, Ariel, Umbriel, Titania, and Oberon.

Why are there so many moons?

In addition to the moons that formed with the planets themselves, there are many more that were part of the huge number of asteroids, comets, rocks, and ice chunks that exist in the solar system. While some were destroyed by planetary collisions, others were able to establish stable orbits around the larger planets.

The large moon of Neptune, Triton, is believed to have been a wandering object in the Kuiper Belt (like Pluto) that veered too close to Neptune's gravity and became captured.

What is Saturn's smallest moon?

If you discount the hundreds of moonlets, then the smallest moon is Aegaeon with a diameter of about half a kilometer

Who is Neil Armstrong's wife?

Armstrong's first wife of 38 years, Janet, divorced him in 1994. He met his second wife, Carol Held Knight, in 1992 at a golf tournament. Seated together at the breakfast, she said little to Armstrong, but a couple of weeks later, she received a call from him asking what she was doing. She replied she was cutting down a cherry tree, and 35 minutes later Armstrong was at her house to help out. They were married on June 12, 1994

How many moons does the sun have?

The Sun doesn't have "moons".

The term "moon" applies to satellites of planets or planetoids. An object orbiting the Sun is classified as a planet, dwarf planet, asteroid, comet, or a Kuiper Belt object.

Why do all the planets revolve around the sun?

Planets revolve around the Sun due to gravitational force, which is strongest at the center of mass of a system. The Sun's immense gravity pulls the planets towards it, causing them to orbit around it in elliptical paths. This balance of gravitational forces keeps the planets in their orbits.

What is a moon buggy?

It allowed the astronauts a greater speed and range of movemet and enabled them to carry more gear. In addition it was an experiment to see if they could build a vehicle that would operate in null atmosphere.

What are depressions on the moon called?

Depressions on the moon are called craters, which are formed by the impact of meteoroids, asteroids, or comets hitting the lunar surface. These impacts cause the surface material to be ejected, creating a depression in the process.

Why do things happen to preteens?

things happen to preteens because they are making a big change in there life . they are going from kids to teenagers. they are just starting pueberty which is no fun . and it is a tie were kids are confused of the things that go on . like drugs, violence, etc

The first man to go to the moon?

The first man to land his feet on the moon, was the American astronaut Neil Armstrong, they landed on the moon in the Apollo 11 on 20/7/1969. And they returned safely to earth on the 24/7/1969..

But the first man to to go to the moon was Apollo 8 astronauts Frank Borman, James Lovell and William Anders.

What time does the moon come out in Canada?

The moon takes about 25 hours to circle the earth, so just like any place in the world, the moon rises about an hour later each night. During the full moon, it rises just about sunset and when the moon is new, it rises with the sun. There are 6 time zones in Canada and this needs to be factored in as well.

What is the name of the object with an orbital period of 58000years with a 10km diameter?

The object you are referring to is likely Sedna, a dwarf planet located in the outer regions of our solar system. Sedna's highly elliptical orbit takes it about 58000 years to complete one full orbit around the Sun, and it has an estimated diameter of around 1,000 km.

Is it normal for someone to use their toes like their fingers and in fact can pinch hard enough to bring blood If this is normal is there a lot of people born with this ability?

No, it is not normal for someone to have the ability to use their toes like fingers and pinch hard enough to cause bleeding. This could indicate a rare condition called ectrodactyly or be a unique physical trait. It is not common for people to be born with such an ability.

Does uranus have volcanoes?

No. Uranus is a gas giant and doesn't have a solid surface like the rocky bodies of the solar system, such as Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars and many moons. It is theorised to have a solid iron core, but this wouldn't allow for volcanic activity.

Uranus' moon Ariel has many features that are theorised to be caused by volcanic action. These actions are caused by the massive gravity of Uranus squeezing and squashing the moon.

Can Artificial satellites orbit forever?

no they can not orbit forever. However, the time that a satellite will remain in orbit is dependent on altitude. Satellites in orbits above about 1500 miles will never decay and fall to Earth, in the expected lifetime of the solar system.

Satellites will not stay in orbit forever. How long they stay up depends on how high they are and the satellite's ballistic coefficient, or mass/frontal area. The drag from our atmosphere decreases with height. Satellites in low orbits, say 500 km, will decay in a few years. At 1000 km they will stay up perhaps a century. Above a few thousand km they would stay practically forever.

Proper disposal of spacecraft is important. A small piece of spacecraft or debris can continue to orbit for a long time, presenting a hazard to operating spacecraft.

Does the sun shine on the moon?

Yes. What you see when you look at the moon is the sun light on the moon reflecting to you. Except when the Earth is located between the Sun and the Moon [called a total lunar eclipse]. Even then a small amount of light which is defracted through the Earth's atmosphere get to the Moon, but it is diffused light, not shining directly from the Sun to the Moon.
