If your heart hurts what could be the matter with it?

Are you sure your 'heart' is what is hurting? There are a lot of 'body parts' in the area of your heart. How long have you had this 'hurting' feeling? It could be:

  • indigestion. acid reflux or 'heartburn'
  • Stomach ulcers
  • Gall bladder problems
  • Chest pain or inflammation from previous injuries to your chest,
  • Muscle pains in your chest (over exercising or heavy lifting),
  • Nerve damage from your arms or shoulders (as in carpal tunnel syndrome or shoulder strains)

You could have problems with your heart, but you'll need to see a doctor who'd need to perfom several tests. {Heart attacks are usually accompanied by severe pain felt in the left arm, travelling up to your jaw as if you had a bad toothache, as well as shortness of breath and sweating. Women don't always show all of these symptoms (sometimes only having toothache-like symtopms) and are usually considered to only have digestive problems. An EKG test is necessary to find out if the person has had a heart attack}. SEE A DOCTOR!

Is spondylolisthesis of the spine a serious problem?

Yes, spondylolisthesis of the spine is always considered a serious problem. This is true because spondylolisthesis by definition is a problem of instability and misalignment, and as such always has the potential to suddenly worsen.

Spondylolisthesis the forward movement or slippage of one spinal bone (vertebra) in relation to the position of the vertebra that is immediately below it. The forward movement is theoretically possible in any area of the spine, but is more common in cervical spine (neck) and the lower spine (low back). Spondylolisthesis occurs either as a result of weakness of the structure of a spinal bone when a part (pars interarticularis) is not formed correctly, or as a result of violent trauma to the spine that causes fracture of the spinal bone that allows for this abnormal movement.

This abnormal alignment problem can at times be minimal and hard to detect even with careful measurement, and at other times the amount of forward movement can be considerable in which the two vertebrae almost lose contact from each other.

Any degree of forward movement in a case of spondylolisthesis represents instability to the spinal column where it occurs and thus a serious threat to the spinal cord, as well as cause pain and reduced spinal movement.

Pain is the first symptom that alerts to a developing spondylolisthesis, sometimes mild and occasional, or sometimes constant and severe. Even if a spondylolisthesis causes slight pain or even no pain, it should be considered serious because every case of forward slippage of a vertebra has the potential to suddenly become worse as a result of a sudden fall, automobile accident or simply the advancement of the spinal spondylosis (aging of the spine).

How do you heal a minor quad tear I hurt it playing soccer and eveytime I kick the ball there is a shooting pain Can I attempt to play through this or can I hurt it further?

I practiced outpatient orthopedic PT for 10 years. You shouldn't play through this if it is recurring. Every time you feel the sharp pain you are probably re-straining the muscle tissue causing inflammation and pain...which increases your overall healing time. Chronic strain to muscle tissue can cause significant scarring and predispose you to future injury in the same muscle. I would recommend avoiding ANY activity that causes the sharp pain for 7-10 days. Do PAIN-FREE quad stretches and EASE into kicking by starting with easy passing and NO shots or long balls. You should have NO pain with these activities. At 2 weeks start with longer passing and eventually easy shots on goal. If you re-injure the muscle, rest, and apply ice for 20min 2-3/day for 24-48 hrs. Then start with the stretches and process listed above. Best of luck.
