Application programs have to be designed to work with a specific operating system. The program tells the operating system what it would like to do and the operating system takes the command and makes things happen on the actual screen and drives the physical computer.

So the program has to speak the same language (if you will) as the operating system and the operating system has to be designed for a certain make of processor and motherboard.

The operating system acts as a 'go between' for the program you want to use on a machine. The program software does not have to 'know' exactly how to switch the circuits in the computer, to make things happen. It simply hands an instruction to the operating system, the OS then takes care of it and makes things happen in the physical world. (input and output).
