Unless using ovulation testing kits or Fertility Awareness Method you can't know for sure when you ovulate/ovulated. I would like to correct the above statement. Mid-cycle bleeding is, in fact, fairly normal. Some women experience spotting during ovulation and it is considered a very positive sign of fertility. This spotting will be bright red and tinged with mucous. Implantation spotting generally occurs a week before up to the week of the missed period and is generally brownish in color.

I can give you a rough idea of the correlation. The lining of a woman's uterus starts building up after menstruation so that if a fertilized egg implants itself on the womb and starts to grow, it will have nourishment. I believe I read that ovulation usually occurs about 7 days after the end of the menstrual cycle.
