Was Yahweh a pagan god of the Levant?

No. Yahweh is the Hebrew pronunciation of the English Bible name Jehovah, which the Bible names as the one creator of the universe and everything in it. Jehovah has nothing to do with any pagan god or goddess.

ANSWER: The above answer is not true. Do some research and you'll find out that Yahweh was originally an Egyptian god. None of the Jewish names for God are original or made up by the Jews. All are borrowed from other nations. Yahweh is borrowed from Egypt.

yet ill informed, the Hebrews were actually the native Egyptian who were denied citizenship and therefore the language, religion, and culture of the Jewish faith were then originally a Egyptian subculture. Rather it was the majority culture opposed to the indoctrinated culture of the political power-holders that was pro bally present at the time of hyskos invasion. Egyptian is not a synonym for pagan...unless you are truly foreign to the narrative or ignorant to the state of biblical Egypt. Translations become muddied when biases such as Egyptian=pagan, in relation to words and phrases supplant true knowlege and understanding of god the the history of god's earth.

El (Elohim) Along with Yawah, Ba'al, Asherah and other Canaanite Gods where part of the Pantheon of Gods of the Canaanite people. yo in short answer yes.

The first two answers are culturally taught in various places, but have no scientific underpining, and are likely more reflective of misplaced nationalism than empirical fact. The Hebrews were a Canaanite people of the West-central portion of The Levant. The third answer is essentially correct, despite the mistake of cognating El to Elohim. The Martu, a proto-ugarit speaking people, joined the Akkadian conquests, and subsequently settled in the city-states of Ur, Lagash, and Uruk, among others. They worshiped Yaweh predominantly, eventually rejecting the other deities of that pantheon. Yaweh, a minor storm god, was the youngest son of the sky god El, and his dominon was generative creation. "Pagan" is a roman word meaning "from (or of) the pagus". A pagus was a country district, i.e. "the boondocks"; among catholics in the Holy Roman Empire, the term came to mean virtually any non-monotheistic religion. It has also been used (incorrectly) to describe Buddhism and other religions that have no gods at all, as a sort of "everybody but us" exclusionary term.

The last response fits in with my research but is incorrect about Buddhism. Buddhism has celestial Buddhas which, in some branches of Buddhism, are decidedly deities. Pure Land Buddhism chants to Amitābha in order to be taken to his heaven where they spend the rest of their eternal life in meditation with him and the other followers. He is Christ-like and the hook used to get Pure Land to convert to Christianity with claims that Christ is Amitābha. He has the god-like powers to make a death peaceful and to effect change in a person's life.

Who was the king who banned pagan practices in Judah?

It seems that King Hezekia attempted to institute mnotheism in Judah, but the pagan gods returned under his son and successor, Mannessah.

King Josiah instituted the Deuteronomistic reforms, including the reinstitution of monotheism and the restriction of religious worship to the Jerusalem Temple. Although henceforth monotheistic Judaism was to be the official religion of Judah, the Bible itself points to continued private worship of other gods up until at least the Babylonian Exile.

Where can you find an amulet or talisman that can suppress all the bad inside you?

Its called Jesus, you can find it in a church near you. _______________ If you find such a thing, even if it is a revered person, destroy or run from it at all costs. Suppressing "all the bad in you" is a futile and totally unhealthy desire. While you are in the flesh, you are prone to the flesh. You are looking for some kind of 'quick fix' rather than understanding that spiritual growth is a matter of reasonable discipline and guided practice. Even those who believe that faith brings them to a new nature will admit that the effects of being in 'the world' are not wiped out. It is how you then deal with life and with matters of the world that make a difference, not the unreasonable desire to be freed from reality. Don't overly fear what every person who ever drew breath has had to face.

What offerings does the goddess Danu enjoy?

Since.... Danu was a battle goddess from the bronze era... I'd say she would probably enjoy anything from a piece of weaponry to blood to horse hair. Clarification of Question While that information will prove most useful in an upcoming legal battle, I was actually referring to Danu in her aspect as the Irish/pan-Celtic Mother of the Fairies, and Goddess of Inspiration and Healing. Any ideas on that aspect of the Great Mother?

Did the Pagan belief about birds mating on February 14th lead to the association of St. Valentine with lovebirds?

One interpretation:What a great question, and such a fascinating history with it. There are many different stories tangled together regarding St. Valentine's, and it is hard to know exactly which is more historically correct.

The main stories which have led to the association of St. Valentine with "love" birds, are that of a roman festival, bird's mating habits, the "real" Valentines, and a literary giant. All tangled up in the mix and resulting in the day we now celebrate as Valentine's day.

In ancient Rome, there were many festivals held in and around February which were associated with fertility, the most notable of which is probably Lupercalia. The ancient Athenian calendar meanwhile, held that the period from mid January until mid-February was the month of Gamelion, the time when two of their most powerful Gods, Zeus and Hera, were married. During these festivities, many games were played, including the practise of putting girls names into a box, to be drawn out by a suitor whom she would partner with for the festival, and sometimes beyond. The first love notes!

Pope Gelasius I (492--496) later abolished the festivities however, believing them to be "too Pagan" and primitive. But in many places, the association between January/ February, and couplings remained, and February 14th was known as Lover's day.

How St. Valentine comes into the mix is the harder part, and historians have argued fiercely about it for centuries. There are many legends associated with him, including that he was a priest who defied a ban on marriages (the ruler at the time believed that marriage was causing a decline in men signing up to the army, as only single men could enrol) , and continued to perform ceremonies until he was put to death as a martyr on February 14th, Lover's day. While he was waiting for his execution, couples whom he had married brought him letters of sympathy stating how "love is better than war" - another possible 'love note' origin. Many years later, February 14th was named St. Valentine's day in honour of him.

And now to put the final piece of the puzzle in place!

The origin of the term "love birds" is most likely from a single literary occurrence. In 1382, the English poet, and author Geoffrey Chaucer, wrote a poem to commemorate the 1st anniversary of the engagement of King Richard II of England to Anne of Bohemia. In it, he wrote the lines:

For this was on seynt Volantynys day

Whan euery bryd comyth there to chese his make.

Clearly influenced by the stories based around St. Valentines and February 14th love/ fertility legends, Chaucer unwittingly gave rise to the association of birds with Valentine's.

So what we have is a big old mess of stories, that over time have have merged into one - a bit like Chinese whispers. And that, is one interpretation of how St. Valentine's is linked to mating birds.

How poular is germanic neopaganism in the world now?

I've heard Asatru being described as "germanic neopaganism" and I'm assuming this is what you are referring to. But this is actually an incorrect description. Asatru is not a new religion. In fact, it is an ancient religion that is being reconstructed. Asatru is gaining new followers, every day. Though, the number of followers is still pretty small, compared to other religions.
