What is a description of the Pearl Harbor battle?

Pearl Harbor was a surprise attack by carrier aircraft launched from six aircraft carriers who had closed to within two hundred miles of Hawaii undetected. Most naval authorities had thought an attack by naval aircraft on Pearl Harbor could cause little damage, because the water of the Harbor was believed to be too shallow for torpedo bombers to avoid having the torpedoes they dropped stick in the mud of the harbor bottom, and because the heaviest bombs usually carried by carrier airplanes was a 500 pond bomb, which would not penetrate the armored deck of battleships. The Japanese overcame these problems by much practice at low-level torpedo bombing and by fitting their torpedoes with wooden fins which added buoyancy, so they were able to torpedo-bomb successfully. The Japanese also used other torpedo bombers as high level bombers, and equipped these with 2000 pound armor-piercing battleship shells fitted with bomb fins, which when dropped from several thousand feet did penetrate the armored deck of battleships, one of which exploded the ship's magazines of the USS Arizona and destroyed it. The Japanese were able to do significant damage to the battleships of the US Pacific fleet, though eventually all but two of these battleships were repaired and saw service later in the war. The Japanese were unlucky in that none of the US aircraft carriers were in the harbor when they attacked. The Japanese could have made the attack much worse had they attacked the dry-dock gates, the submarine base in the harbor, and especially the fuel farm, but they ignored all these valuable targets. Destruction of the fuel farm would have forced the US Pacific Fleet back over 2000 miles to its bases on the west coast of the US. The Japanese fleet lost only 29 aircraft in the attack and got away still undetected.

Conspiracy theory Pearl Harbor?

It has been strongly suggested that Franklin D. Roosevelt had advanced warning of the imminent attack on Pearl Harbor, yet allowed it to happen. His presumed reason was that it would be an excuse for the U.S to enter World War 2 (which he had wanted to do from the earliest days of the war, but the Republicans in congress stonewalled this at every turn), thereby converting the crumbling U.S economy into full-on wartime production and extending the draft. All of these things helped end the Great Depression, which was his long-term goal since entering the oval office.

Basically, "he broke eggs to break an omelette" is the jist of the theory.

How did Pearl Harbor affect the United States?

Pearl Harbor, by giving Roosevelt the green light to bring the US directly into World War II, concentrated power in the hands of the federal government. This happens in all wars. No government can wage war without greatly reducing the freedom of its people. After the war, many of the freedoms Americans lost were returned to them. But inevitably the government did not return to its pre-war size. A government grows after every war and crisis. For more information read "Crisis and Leviathan" by Robert Higgs.

Did the Japanese attack Pearl Harbor because they wanted peace?

well...they did it because they wanted to knock out the U.S. Pacific Fleet as a significant fighting force so we could not oppose their conquest of South East Asia and the Pacific Islands. What effect did the Japanese attack on pearl harbor have on US foreign?

The United States took a definitive stance in World War II by declaring war on Japan. Previously, the United States had been neutral with Allied proclivities, but now it was a new Allied Power. Within the following days, the Nazi Germans and the Italians declared war on the United States to reciprocate the US declaration of war on Japan. However, since the United States' strongest ally was the United Kingdom, both FDR and Churchill found it more prudent to put the strongest effort in winning the war in Europe before turning their effort more strongly to the Pacific.

Naturally, because of the declaration of war, the United States ceased trade with the Axis powers and all Axis-Occupied Countries or Partners.
