Straight (Five cards in sequence. Ace can be high or low)

Three-Of-A-Kind (Same rank)

Two Pair (Two cards of same rank and another two of same rank)

I'm not sure what you mean when you say "break even", in poker you either win, lose, or split the pot. So, if you mean why do some hands win and others don't, it is because some hands are better than others and some players are better than others.
