Potatoes came to Australia with the First Fleet, in 1788. They were one of the few foods that could withstand the many long months at sea. By the early 1800s, they were being grown throughout the new colony.

Potatoes grow on a type of shrub that grows very low to the ground, providing much ground cover. The ends of the shrub branches (spuds or 'eyes') have the appearance of roots so they natural grow into the grow, but this is actually the site of potato growth. This explains how they grow underground.

First you skin your potatoes. Then you boil them for about 2-4 minutes. After that you put them in a bowl and mash them with a tool of your choice. Add some butter and a pinch of pepper and salt and POOF you've got mashed potatoes!

Yes, they do. This is due to a property of convective heat transfer known as turbulent flow. Turbulent flow brings more molecules of hot water into contact with the molecules of potato over a given time period thus transferring more heat to cook the potato faster. Heat transfer at the molecular level occurs at a very high rate of speed so fluid dynamics of the boiling water has a great effect on the transfer of heat. Less turbulent flows, like simmering water, will transfer less heat than a rapidly boiling pot over the same time period.

Purchase some baking potatoes or use extra large potatoes. Heat your oven to medium heat. Scrub and wash your potatoes. Place potatoes on a baking sheet and put into oven. Potatoes can be what we call an easy keeper when they are raw. If kept in a cool dry place they can last up to 2 months. As soon as a potato is dug up it starts to dry up.

You can control this process by keeping it cool and dry. The longer a potato sits the dryer it becomes. Use the potato before it loses most of its moisture.

These are actually shoots, not roots. I am not a scientist, but I have read enough articles to believe... if a potato is wrinkled, shrunken, with sprouts that it is not safe to eat. Otherwise, one or two sprouts on a fresh potato is probably okay.
