Why is it bad to eat green potatoes?
Opinions and myths abound on this one! After looking at some trusted sites, the story seems to be that it's probably not a problem unless you plan on eating around ten pounds; but you'll probably want to cut out the green parts anyway. Here are three trusted sites -- the last one disagreeing with the first two.
Good Housekeeping ( http://www.goodhousekeeping.com/food/cooking/ask-susan-green-potatoes-1007 ) says it's not a big deal -- you'd never eat enough to worry about.
Kansas State University ( http://www.k-state.edu/media/WEB/News/NewsReleases/greenpotatoes101404.html ) The plant pathologist interviewed never saw a person develope a reaction -- you would get a bellyache before ra reaction. Besides, you can simply cut the green part out anyway.
Cooperative Extension ( http://www.extension.org/faq/4200 ) This one recommends " To be safe, it is best to not eat green potatoes."

Potatoes naturally contain some amount of the toxin solanine and are members of the nightshade family. When exposed to sunlight, potatoes turn green under the skin and the levels of solanine are increased.
Most health professionals recommend that any potatoes which have turned green be thrown away. It is probably safe if you just remove the green bits and the eyes or sprouts as they also contain high levels of solanine.
Reactions to ingestion to solanine can range from mild nausea to convulsive vomiting and diarrhea. High levels cause more severe and life-threatening reactions.

Who invented the potato clock?
William A. Borst invented the potato clock in 1983. He was helping his step daughter with a science project when he remembered a high school physics demonstration where a battery was formed by inserting two metal probes into a potato. After recreating that demonstration, he was looking for some electrical device that could be powered by such a small amount of energy. He found a digital clock module in his workshop that required a very small amount of current but the required voltage was greater that a single "potato battery" could supply. He then connected two of the spuds in series to increase the voltage supplied to the clock module. It worked. He was able to operate the digital clock module using two potatoes.
At the time all this took place, William was a partner in an auto repair business. Wondering how long one of the Potato Clocks would run, he setup an experiment to test the longevity of the spud batteries. While this test was going on, a customer who happened to work for a local newspaper came into the repair shop. After inquiring about the unusual clock there at the shop, the local paper ran a story about it. This story ultimately went out OJ the national wire services and the Potato Clock story was out.
He never made much money on this product but enjoyed the attention that it brought to him for a time. The rights to manufacture ended up with Skilcraft Corporation who manufactures the clock today under the name of "The Two Potato Clock".
Now you know the real story of the potato clock.
Best wishes to all who read this. --William A. Borst, Inventor.

Does potato bread have gluten?
Potatoes alone do not contain gluten. Depending on what is added to make the "mashed potatoes" they should still be gluten-free eg. often milk and butter or margarine is added and this is gluten free. If for any reason a flour is added made from wheat barley rye or oats - this will then add gluten. NB: most hash-browns have a flour containing gluten added to make the exterior coating. (A corn flour or flour from maize is still gluten-free however).
