Protestantism

Generally associated with the protests against the Catholic Church and its methods, Protestants follow Jesus Christ. One of the early scholars to lead the break from the established church was Martin Luther. If you have questions about anything to do with Protestantism, this is place to ask them.

What is the age of accountability?

The "age of accountability" is the age at which a person really understands right from wrong, good and evil, sin and so on, and know that they are personally accountable to God for what they do and think. Because the age of thirteen was traditionally when a Jewish boy assumed his full adult obligations upon the celebration of his Bar Mitzvah, some Christians believe that therefore by thirteen a child reaches the age of accountability. The Biblical verses often used to justify an "age of accountability" are :-

Rom 1:20 For the invisible things of him since the creation of the world are clearly seen, being perceived through the things that are made, even his everlasting power and divinity; that they may be without excuse.

Rom 2:17 Indeed you bear the name of a Jew, and rest on the law, andglory in God,

Rom 2:18 and know his will, andapprove the things that areexcellent, being instructed out of the law,

Rom 2:19 and are confident thatyou yourself are a guide of the blind, a light to those who are in darkness,

Rom 2:20 a corrector of the foolish, a teacher of babies, having in the law the form of knowledge and of the truth.

2Co 5:10 For we must all be revealed before thejudgment seat of Christ; that each one may receive the things in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.

However, that is a chronological age and not an emotional age: it takes no account of maturity. A one-size-fits-all age cannot be arbitrarily made to fit everyone regardless, because the age at which an individual person reaches maturity will differ from someone else. For example, girls usually mature at an earlier age than boys, some children are very mature at an early age, some children are immature longer than normal, and some immature children never grow up and, through no fault of their own, become immature adults, simpletons, and "intellectually-challenged."

Because of this variation between individuals, a particular chronological age cannot be rigidly set in concrete to apply to everyone regardless: the "age of accountability" is more accurately a "state of accountability". Unfortunately, in the real world, some people never reach this level of accountability and never will. Because they will always be childlike, God regards them as children and blesses them accordingly by giving them automatic entry to Heaven regardless of their actual chronological age.

What is denomination in religion?

A denomination is a specific sect within a world religion and can be implied to most world religions since most world religions are divided within themselves. For example in Christianity a denomination could be Catholics, Baptists, Lutherans, Orthodox, etc. Another example is in Islam, a denomination, or sect, could be Sunni Muslims or Shi'ite Muslims. Denominations still believe in the fundamnetals of the world religion they are associated with (i.e. All Christians, Catholics, Orthodox, Baptists etc. included, believe in God and all Muslims believe in Allah), but interpretations of Scripture and differences in doctrine are what separate denominations. The way I was taught and understand the definition of a denomination relates specifically to the Christian Protestant churches. For example, a group of six adult couples that are all very good friends share the beliefs associated to Christians as a whole. However, this same group has grown up practicing their beliefs different than one another, usually depending on what their families showed them and where they went to church. So, out of the six couples three of them go to a Methodist Church, one to a Church of Christ, one to a Lutheran, and another a Southern Baptist church. Each of these different Denominations are all still considered a part of the Christian Protestant community they just have various traditions or ways of practicing their beliefs, which created the separation called a denomination.

So, based on your question, the denomination term cannot really even been compared or associated with "a world religion" if used properly.

What is 40 days after Easter?

Pentecost takes place 40 days after Resurrection or Easter.

How do Protestants celebrate the Sabbath?

Easter Sunday is usually celebrated with family and friends. A Catholic may celebrate with Mass on Easter Sunday or the night before, called the Easter Vigil. It is a joyfull day of happiness because the Lord has Risen from the dead and has overcome this world and it's evil and has thereby given all a chance to do the same.

Are all Christians reborn?

The concept of rebirth is a metaphor for new Christians. Just as we are born into this world [in the flesh] we can be reborn again as Christians spiritually.

This concept was coined by Jesus in John chapter 3. He is talking to the Rabbi Nicodemus. In a conversation Nicodemus asks Jesus if He was sent from God because the miracles he was doing had to be divine.

Jesus said to him, "Surely, no one can see the Kingdom of God unless he is born again."

Nicodemus doesn't fully understand this idea and when he asks for clarification Jesus expounds; He says that to enter the Kingdom of God you must be born by the flesh and by the Spirit. While flesh gives birth to flesh (your mother gave you birth) so the Spirit gives birth to spirit (you must be born through Christ by accepting him as your savior).

In this aspect we are born again (reborn) as Christians. Our physical life was granted to us by our mothers and fathers but our spiritual life was given to us by God our Father in heaven, through His son, Jesus.

Do other religions besides catholics take communion?

Yes, other religions that take communion are Orthodox Christianity, Protestants (Anglican, Lutheran, Baptist, Mennonites, Anabaptists, Reformed, Presbyterian, United Methodist), and Restorationists (Jehova's Witness, Latter-Day Saints, Seventh Day Adventists, Branch Davidian Seventh Day Adventists).

Are Mormons still protestants?

Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) have never considered themselves to be a Protestant tradition.

The Church considers itself to be a Restorationist Christian tradition. They believe that true Christianity had to be restored directly by God, rather than reformed from existing faiths, as the Protestants believe.

What protestant church was most like catholicism was?

While each denomination has its own subtle variances I believe Lutheranism to be the closest relative to the Catholic Church in its traditional sense. Most services are akin to the reverance of tradition as does Catholicism. Some Lutherans even hold to the reverance of the Mother Mary while others choose to disregard that particular belief. This answer will vary across the American geographic but in generality holds true.

Who started the protestant reformantion?

Really there is no "Protestant religion." It is a broad term often used by 1. Roman Catholics to refer to all other Christians who are not Roman Catholic 2. non-historic, non-denominational Christians who have no other formal title and 3. Non-Roman Catholic, Non-Eastern Orthodox Christians who want to clearly distinguish themselves as non-Roman Catholic.

Others protested before him, but Martin Luther can be credited with the first truly revolutionary reformation movement. That being said, Lutherans have more in common with Roman Catholics, in belief and practice, than with the other modern Protestant Churches. Many Lutherans reject the label "Protestant," since it lumps them with the modern Evangelical movement. The Lutheran and Anglican Churches are the products of conservative reform movements. All other non-Roman Catholic and non-Eastern Orthodox churches are the product of radical reformation movements. Luther and his colleagues rejected the teachings of the founders of these radical Protestant movements as vehemently as he rejected the abuses of the Roman Catholic Church of his day.

Which protestant churches have bishops?

Catholic, Orthodox ( who are of necessity celibate), Episcopalian, and in some cases Methodist and even some Lutheran churches. the State churches in say, Denmark are both Lutheran AND Episcopal being both Lutheran in doctrine and episcopal in church government. These Bishops have specific clerical costumes. In the Us, more businesslike terms as ( diocesan superintendent , or superintendent of Ministry are used. There are thus no Bishops or Cathedrals in American Lutheran churches, generally.
The Roman catholic churches have bishops. They normally live in Bishop's house.

I believe the Church of England also has bishops.

And the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints also has bishops; they are lay members.

What is Christian stewardship?

Basically, stewardship is the idea that God created and therefore owns all of creation. It is ours to use, so it is our responsibility to use it for the work of God and the work of man. We are told to put his wealth to work. That implies not wasting resources and preserving what we are given.

It is also the answer to "How can the rich be Christian?" @#$&&& yes

How many different versions of the 10 commandments are there?

You can easily see for yourself. Read the first one in Exodus, Ch. 20, and the other one

in Deuteronomy, beginning with the 6th Verse in Ch. 5.

Whether we call them different "versions", "commandments", or whatever, the wordings

are clearly different, leading any person who takes the Bible to be anything more than

bedtime stories to ponder what we can learn from the differences between the two.

There is a whole body of over 2,000 years of scholarly commentary that deals with exactly

that question.

Happy reading.

How much money does a chaplain earn?

The salary of a chaplain may vary widely. A large church with wealthy parishoners might be able to provide a very comfortable salary. However a small poor church will not be able to provide nearly as much.

Of course since he is doing Gods work and trusting that God will provide this should never be of consideration to the chaplian.

Do Presbyterians speak in tongues?

No they do not. There is what is known as The Gift of Tongues and also The Interpretation of Tongues. The Gift of Tongues is when a person is given the gift from God to be able to speak in a language of the people he is addressing, when he has never spoken that language before. The Interpretation of Tongues is when a person speaks in his own language but is understood by those who do not speak that language.

Those religions who claim to be able to speak in tongues only speak gibberish which is not understood be anyone, not even the speaker or God.

What does putting on the breastplate of righteousness mean?

A breastplate is a piece of armor used in battle to deflect an enemie's weapon from entering the heart or other vital organ in the chest area.

The Bible names the "Breastplate of Righteousness" as one piece of the "spiritual armor" God's elect must wear in the "struggle of life."

"Therefore put on the FULL ARMOR OF GOD, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand." (Eph.6:13 NIV)

The Bible defines "Righteousness" as: "The Ten Commandments"; God's law.

"My tongue shall speak of Thy Word: for ALL THY COMMANDMENTS ARE RIGHTEOUSNESS." (Ps.119:172)

Peter tells us that Noah was a "preacher of Righteousness" [II Peter 2:5]... meaning, by biblical definition, that Noah preached to his generation the Ten Commandments [that the world today doesn't believe existed until Moses].

But, the spiritual piece of God's Armor, the Breastplate of Righteousness... "protects the heart."

It's a Spiritual safeguard of God's Wisdom, Knowlesge and Understanding of His law in one's heart against the verbal, hurtful "slings and arrows" of hateful persecution flung at God's elect in the world.

King David says of God's laws: "Through Thy precepts I get Understanding: therefore I hate every false way. Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path. (Ps.119:104-105) The Commandments are designed to be our guide in life.

And: "O how I love Thy law! It is my meditation all the day." (verse 97)

And: "Great peace have they which love Thy law: and nothing shall offend them." (verse 165)

God's Commandments seem to be a great offense to much of modern professing Christianity, today... ridiculing and belittling those who dare to utter King David's heartfelt words; "O how I love Thy law!"

Yet, God's Word commands His elect to "put on the Breastplate of Righteousness" -- instill in your heart the laws of God. For He tells us that every last Child of His WILL HAVE HIS LAWS WRITTEN THERE before He is done with mankind.

"For this is the covenant that I will make with the House of Israel after those days [after He returns to earth with His Kingdom], saith the Lord; I WILL PUT MY LAWS INTO THEIR MIND, AND WRITE THEM IN THEIR HEARTS: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to Me a people: and they shall not teach every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for ALL SHALL KNOW ME, from the least to the greatest.

"For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness[their breaking of the Commandments], and their sins and their iniquities [the transgression of the law - I John 3:4] will I remember no more." (Heb.8:10-12)

Those whom God is calling now are having God's Commandments written in their hearts... that they might see beyond the persecution of the world against them... and not be offended by the world's ignorance of His Truth.

God's Commandments are summarized by the word; LOVE. Dedicated Love for God... and for one's fellowman. It's fulfilled through God's act of Mercy performed by Jesus Christ when He died for man, created in God's image -- to redeem man from the god of this world, to whom the first man sold himself in the beginning [see Gen.3].

The wearer of God's Breastplate of Righteousness "Loves" those who persecute him. The wearer of God's Armor was probably a persecutor once himself. But, filled with God's Wisdom, Knowledge and Understanding... they are able to see beyond the verbal and physical abuse of others... and extend God's Mercy that they received, toward others.

God's Breastplate of Righteousness is "having the Love of God in one's heart" toward mankind -- which is contrary to selfish human nature.

It's overcoming one's nature... and yielding to the Commandments of God. And due to God's Selfless Love revealed in their heart... they Love others as all men naturally and selfishly love themselves.

The Breastplate of Righteousness is the "Selfless Love of God" in one's heart toward others. It's Loving and Keeping the Commandments of God [contrary to much of modern professing Christianity].

"...here are they that KEEP THE COMMANDMENTS OF GOD, and THE FAITH OF JESUS." (Rev.14:12)

The Breastplate of RIGHTEOUSNESS is the spiritual safeguard of God's Love around one's heart that reflects God's Love outwardly toward others.

Another piece of God's Armor, the Shield of FAITH, however, is more versatile [according to God's Word, ABOVE ALL]... and is held out away from the body, able to be swung around in all directions: "...wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked." (Eph.6:16)

We're told to put "all" of God's Spiritual Armor on in order to successfully wage our personal war to overcome the world... as well as our own selfish nature, through Jesus Christ.

The Breastplate of Righteousness, however, is God's Commandments; Spiritual Heart Protection.

What does Jonathan Edwards compare humans to in sinners in the hands of an angry god?

Edwards is conveying that it is necessary for humanity to repent their sins, since everyone is a sinner. He condemns the excessive pride of mankind and secular nature of the Great Awakening and the scientific clashes that it created with the church.

How do you get possessed?

One answer from our community:

Demon possession is a very real thing: if a person doesn't believe in demons and therefore demon-possession in the first place then they are a prime candidate for it. You cannot be initially possessed if you don't allow it. You get possessed by inviting demons into your mind in the first place, through things such as ouija boards and (believe it or not) halloween,

Matthew 12

45 Then he goes and takes with him seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter and dwell there; and the last state of that man is worse than the first. So shall it also be with this wicked generation."

Another answer:

You probably do not want to be possessed, but may want to know what could cause you to be possessed so that you can avoid it. Or maybe you are a little fascinated by the unknown.

To get possessed by a demon, or at least to believe that you are possessed by a demon, you must first be a Christian or a Muslim. There is no evidence of an atheist or, for example, a Hindu ever becoming possessed. There are no clear rules for getting possessed, just as there are no clear rules for exorcism, as each denomination that believes in demon possession has its own ideas.

What is certain is that spooky forms of entertainment are just that - entertainment. For example, no one has ever become possessed because of Halloween. In fact there has probably never been a genuine case of possession at all.
