You can suspect rabies, if the raccoon seems unafraid of humans, seems to walking with an uneven gait, it may be falling over, or going in circles. Always report an animal you suspect is rabid to your local animal control, or call a police station. Never approach the animal, or try to kill it yourself. The body needs to be properly disposed of.

What are rabies symptoms in a cat?

Opossums are a mammal in the infraclass called marsupials. While All mammals are susceptible to rabies, opossums rarely get the disease. This is thought to be due to their low body temperature.

people often attribute a change in behavior to rabies. Opossums are nocturnal so people think that a change in behavior would be seeing them during the day or acting strangely is a sign of the disease, however they are actually diurnal, and it is not uncommon to see them during the day. One of the Opossums defenses is "playing possum" and they will often drool, wobble and fall over, this is just a defense and does not necessarily indicate disease. If left alone they will slowly amble off. It is best never to touch or bother a wild animal, but the risk of rabies from an Opossum is extremely small.

No, they often come out during the day seeking a new shelter if something happened to their home, or if they are greatly in need of water.

True possums, which are those found in Australia, do not have rabies as there is no rabies in Australia.

Opossums of North America, a quite different animal, have body temperatures that are generally too low to harbour the rabies virus, although there are always exceptions.

Note that when threatened, opossums will often "play possum" mimicking dead or sick animals - to the point of mimicking the appearance of having rabies - even if they are not infected. Since they are primarily nocturnal, when people encounter them during the day the opossum is more likely to feel threatened and thus act sick. This may be one of the reasons that people think the possums they see during the day are infected with rabies.

How much would it be to get a dog rabie shot?

Costs for canine immunizations vary greatly across cities, counties and states. You should call local vets to get a better idea of real dollars and cents costs. A general guideline, is that in many areas, Veterinarians don't have to give the shot, and will have their Nurses and Aides do them. Generally when a Nurse or Aide does the shot, the fee is less, because the doctor did not have to spend time in with the patient. Additionally you should look to your local animal shelter, to find out if they are working on a rabies vaccination clinic any time soon, as they are even less expensive when they are giving enmasse rather than one at a time. Asside from the local shelter, check with local breed and rescue groups for any upcoming events. Your main concerns are low cost, and getting a proper certificate so that you can prove the vacinnation. In general expect to pay 10 to 50 dollars. The high end would include being physically seen by a licensed veterinarian (the doctor) and the low end would be the mass innoculation at an event.

Rabies vaccinations in cats need to be renewed every 1 to 3 years. Your cat shouldn't contract rabies if they've been recently vaccinated. If you think your cat has been exposed to rabies, or can't remember when your cat was last vaccinated, call your vet ASAP. There is no cure or treatment for rabies in cats once symptoms occur, it's a fatal disease. It's also a disease that humans can contract.

Unfortunately, there are no tests that definitively show if an animal has rabies except for a test that is performed on samples of the brain after the animal has died. This is why it's extremely important to keep up with your cat's rabies vaccinations.

Do possums have rabies?

Answer 1:

Yes, if the opossum either is a carrier or has the disease. Opossums, skunks, raccoons (& I don't know which other mammals) can be carriers of rabies. Any physical contact with body fluids (even saliva) from an infected animal or a carrier is the method of transmission. It's best to keep your pets' vaccines up to date to protect them. There is no preventative vaccine for humans, so any contact with wild mammals, or handling your dog after it was in contact with a wild animal, has the potential to expose you to rabies. It's best to contact your local authorities if you suspect exposure (veterinarian, wildlife, or law enforcement, medical professionals).

Answer 2:

Your dog is extremely unlikely to get rabies from killing an opossum. Whilst it is believed that any warm blooded mammal can get rabies, opossums' body temperatures are too low to harbour rabies. It would be extremely rare for a dog to contract rabies from killing an opossum. It is more likely to get tetanus from opossum bites or scratches during the preceding fight, and you fail to have it taken to the vet for a tetanus injection.

Having said that, however, there has been at least one documented case of an opossum having rabies. See the related link below.
