Renaissance

The Renaissance originated in Italy for a great many number of reasons. This area was known for its elaborate life.

Desiderius Erasmus Roterodamus is the name of the theologist, scholar who critisized Catholicism.

Expansion of European rule and power was a significant interest in the Age of Discovery. They mostly explored the New World in search of passages that were said to lead to Asia and the East Indies, its products, and some simply to find adventure. :)

It began later in the north because they had less exposure to trade and new ideas. The invention of the printing press was a primary factor of why it started in the north.

Mostly because the Medici family, who was very rich and powerful at the time, sponsored many artists like da Vinci, Brunelleschi, and Michalangelo, and without them they wouldn't have been able to create and sell so much work.

The Renaissance was important because it awakened the world from a very long, dark sleep. The Middle Ages had squashed people's dreams and forced them into an meaningless pattern of life. The Renaissance period brought progression, change, and beauty. In fact, the word "renaissance" means rebirth. And the earth was, in a way, reborn when the Dark or Middle Ages reached their close.

There were several factors that converged that made it possible to Italy to be the cradle of Renaissance. One of the most important was the economic factor. Florence, the most remarkable Italian cities for Renaissance was at the crossroads of a trading route, making the city flourish, which converted it in an adequate breeding ground for the arts. Another factor was the influence of Greek culture scholars, who settled in that city after the fall of Constantinople.

Now there is a reason for this, but it will take someone more bright than me to explain it to you: for some reason Europe makes an advance in technology in the Middle Ages which was unmatched by others. What makes the European go exploring I do not know, no Japanese or Chinese or Indian vessels ever sailed up the Thames or Tagus. Far less did they come here to conquer (I'm in UK) as we did going there. And we took weapons with us, the bayonet and the musket & the lance armed cavalryman. And here comes the important bit: We exploited to the full the people and the lands we conqured. Yes, sure the British took them Chgristianity and Cricket. But we are no less guilty, more so in many instances, of exploitation. The British in particular built a massive trading fleet, and then along came the Industrial Revolution at just the right time. Bingo ! That's not only particular to Britain, it happened all over Europe. But quite why it happened when it did I do not know, I like to call it an accident of history, but I'm not sure that is quite the truth.

The renaissance originated in Florence, the reason is generally assumed to be related to the social, political, and civic structure of Florence at the time. It may also relate to the migration of many Greek scholars to that area of Italy at the time. One of the assumed "pioneers" so to speak of the renaissance itself may have been writer Dante Alighieri, who was the creator of many unique philosophical concepts of the time. Such philosophical concepts may have inspired the type of thought that spawned the renaissance.

The conditions that made Italy the logical setting for the start of the Renaissance was that it was the heartland of the old Roman Empire. Most of Italy still used the Roman Law. Italy's clear legal code made business and trade between different regions much easier. In Italy were many Roman ruins, paintings, sculptures, mosaics, and wall paintings that still remained. Some ancient works of art were brought to Italy with the fall of Constantinople. These ruins and works of art inspired many Italian artists and architects, partly because it was their ancestors who had created many of them. The climate of Italy was milder than that of the countries north of the Alps. The climate did not disrupt trade and that meant that they could trade all the time. The climate also meant that food was plentiful all year long. With that, people were able to devote more time to science and the arts in a place like Italy because they could spend less time earning a living.

The Renaissance began in northern Italy. In the late Middle Ages, Italy was made of about 250 city-states. Some of these city-states were republics ruled by rich aristocrats and merchant families. The Medici family was one of the richest and most powerful. Families like the Medici's used their money to beautify their cities. They had their own courts which included the best artists and scholars. Rulers of different city-states competed for land and power. They hired mercenaries to fight their battles. Politics were cruel, too. Political adviser Niccolo Machiavelli told his prince to ignore questions of good and evil. He argued that rulers should do whatever is necessary to improve their states. People in the city-states wanted to understand the arts. They studied Greek and Roman classics, or humanities. Their studies became known as humanism. Medieval Christians saw themselves as sinners. Humanists did not see people as sinful. They thought people had dignity and worth. They were more interested in life on Earth than heaven or hell. Humanists focused on three classical ideas. They believed in the individual worth of people. They also had a strong commitment to public service. They supported public buildings and funding the arts. And they encouraged people to develop their own skills and talents and have interests in many different subjects.

Italy, surrounded by branches of the Mediterranean Sea, had a great number of ports for shipping, making it a center of great importance to all of southern Europe.

Classical Greece and Rome profoundly influenced the Renaissance in Italy by reviving interest in their artistic and literary ideals. Artists and architects drew inspiration from classical forms, emphasizing symmetry, proportion, and the use of columns and domes, as seen in works like Brunelleschi's dome and Michelangelo's sculptures. In literature, humanist scholars rediscovered and studied ancient texts, leading to a focus on themes of individualism and human experience, prominently reflected in the writings of figures like Petrarch and Machiavelli.
