The stone was made part of the Treaty of Alexandria in 1801, and so came into the possession of the English. While the exact manner of this transfer is the subject of some debate, it is known that Colonel Tomkyns Hilgrove Turner brought the stone to England aboard a captured French frigate. The frigate, and the stone, arrived in Portsmouth in February 1802. Turners orders were to present the stone, and other antiquities, to King George III, who, represented by War Secretary Lord Hobard, ordered that the stone should be placed in the British Museum. Turner argued that the stone should first be presented to the Society of Antiquaries of London. Before the end of 1802, it had, however, been moved to the BM, where it remains to this day.

Why were hieroglyphics important?
Heiroglyphics was a system of writing, like in ancient Egypt, in which pictorial symbols are used to represent meaning or sounds or a combination of meaning and sound.
A later cursive version was developed called heiratic that was quicker to write. In the last centuries B.C. a more refined style, the demotic, replaced the hieratic.
Where the origin of most hieratic characters could be plainly seen in the hieroglyphics, the demotics bore no resemblance to the hieroglyphics from which they were taken
Basicly it was the foundation on which modern writing was built

Additional Info:
The main 'benefit' or knowledge gained by decoding the Rosetta Stone was being able to decipher hieroglyphics. Up until the discovery of the Rosetta Stone, it was assumed that hieroglyphics was a pictographic language, i.e. a picture of a bird represented the word 'bird'. However, after the discovery (and subsequent translating) of the Rosetta Stone, it was determined that hieroglyphics was a phonetic alphabet, where a picture of a bird might stand for the character "B" (that's not accurate, I'm just making an example).
If you have ever used Wingdings in word before, you get the idea of what hieroglyphics are: a pictographic symbol that represents a single character.
