As in many British colonies, the settlers from Great Britain took the game of football with them to NZ and played under many different rules in the early and mid-19th century. Eventually the rules became more uniform and it is the rugby code that became most popular throughout NZ by the end of the century. It has been the dominant football code ever since.

There are no real accurate figures for this as many armature players are no accounted for but it is estimated that over 400,00 play the game - This includes both sex's, junior youth and senior levels plus schools, colleges and universities

You may well have wondered about the sudden trumpet phrase followed by cheers during the World Cup, which became the sound of the World Cup, a signature tune of sorts. Jean-Roger Delsaud of Midi Olympique tells us what that was all about. It comes from Spain and is heard in the local Spanish "ferias", which means feasts. The trumpet sound is the beginning of a famous Spanish "paso-doble", paso-doble (two step) being a typical piece of Spanish music played by "wind" instruments (trumpets, saxophones, etc) and suited to the sound, drama, and movement of the Spanish bullfight. The All Blacks and Ireland have met in test matches 21 times but Ireland have never won. The closest Ireland has come is a 10-10 draw in 1973. Irish side, Munster famously beat the All Blacks 12-0 during the New Zealand side's 1978 grand-slam winning tour of Britain and Ireland.

New Zealanders have to fight the bitter south, and the only other tough rugby team is South Africa. This is because South Africans have to fight off blicks and lions and some of them live in the desert. Australians don't live in the desert so they aren't tough. So tough Kiwis prefer rugby, and traditionally it involved a lot more fighting and drinking: Kiwis and Australians are good at that. I don't if South Africans are good at drinking but they are also good at fighting. Australia's main sport is Rugby League which is possibly even touugher than Rugby Union.
