What is the reason for skidding?

Skidding is the result of loss of traction or excessive friction. If you attempt to suddenly stop a moving object on a slippery surface, the friction from the surface is no longer acting upon the object. Instead, the object is floating over the surface using the slippy substance as friction (which creates little if none).

On the otherhand, objects such as tires can skid when the tire itself is taking the friction instead of the rotor. Essentially the tire is attempting to dig into the road to slow/stop versus the breaks because the breaks are fully applied and typically locked unless ABS activates.

How do running lights on a car work?

Different countries have different rules for what lights need to be showing when the vehicle is in motion. Generally, it refers to the lights you must display when driving a vehicle on a public road. These rules vary.

In Sweden, for instance, you must always display tail lights and dipped or low beam headlights whilst moving. In cars manufactured in such countries the required 'running lights' illuminate when the engine is started. Other lights are additional for mist and fog.

Elsewhere, the UK for instance, dipped or low beam headlights and tail lights must be displayed when visibility is restricted or between certain hours. There is no exact definition of what 'restricted visibility' means. At least one high intensity rear light must be additionally displayed when visibility is severely restricted, fog for instance.

Side lights or parking lights are not called running lights, nor have they been since the very early days of motoring.

A basic rule is if in doubt put your dipped or low beam headlights on.

How does a crumple zone reduce the risk of injury?

A crumple zone is an area of the car specifically designed to fold up like an accordion upon impact. The action of bending the metal requires energy. As the metal crumples, it absorbs energy from the impact. This means that as more of the car crumples, more energy is absorbed by the car and not you. The less energy you absorb, the less likely serious energy will occur. The passenger compartment on the vehicle is designed to crumple either around passengers or not at all, maximizing the crumple zones of the car.

Why shouldn't you use a cell phone while driving?

Driving any vehicle requires the full attention of the driver. When a driver is also chatting away on the phone, they are not fully aware of everything happening about them while traveling about 45 feet per second on the freeway. It should be totally illegal to use a cell phone while driving - there isn't anything THAT important in life that simply can't possibly wait for a few minutes or an hour.

A few years ago, there were no cell phones - people got along just fine without them then and made decent livings and paid their bills, and accomplished lots ob business transactions without the need to chat about them 24/7 as in today's life.

Enjoy the scenery - enjoy the ride ... the life you save may be your own.
