What are the advantages of alternate communication methods during a disaster?

For remote locations, the best bet for my money will always be a generator or solar battery powered short wave radio.Someone, somewhere, will always pick up your signal. I find shortwave enthusiasts unfailingly happy to help and reliable. Most will not only relay your message, but follow up as well. It's well worth the investment in the equipment and learning to be an operator, whether you are in a bush station or an Arctic expedition.

Alternative communication system during disasters in India?

ALTERNATIVE COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS DURING DISASTERS

PSTN or the public switched telephone network is the prime network responsible for transmitting and receiving voice, fax and data. All government and private offices, police stations, fire stations, hospitals and majority of homes and business places are serviced by the PSTN line.

. Amateur Radio operation does not use ground based infrastructure. Moreover these have limited power needs which can easily be met by batteries and generations. Therefore, it has been experienced that Amateur Radio has worked successfully when no other communication worked.

A radio wave is an electromagnetic wave propagated by an antenna.

The floods in 2004 in Assam and Bihar submerged telephone exchanges and damaged telephone exchanges thereby disrupting roads and railways communication. This is the reason why the district headquarters got totally out off from the state headquarters and neighbouring districts.

A major natural disaster or emergency situation like earthquake, cyclone, flood, etc., leaves the public wired and wireless mobile telephone infrastructure damaged and non-functional. This is a transmission towers or disrupted power supply to operate telephone exchanges and cellular transmission towers also affect the radio communication network of police and civil authorities.

Satellite based communication systems refer to communication systems designed for users on the earth but have some equipment in space called a satellite. Various jobs such as taking weather pictures or finding accurate positions are amongst the different job performed by different satellites. These are sometimes refered to as COSMAT's and are essentially radio relay stations in space.

Geo-stationary orbit satellites are stationed above the earth at a position around 36000 kms above the equator. The images of weather forecasts and cyclone observations that we see on our television are made with the help of images from weather satellites.

A major disaster (flood, earthquake, etc.) or emergency situation affects telephone exchanges and communication networks thereby disconnecting the affected areas from other parts of the world. In such situations, the urgent needs of disaster affected population are not communicated to government authorities, voluntary organizations and other unaffected people. This result in severe loss of human lives, livestock, property etc.

This situation calls for reliable alternate communication links, to ensure that the right resources are provided to the right people at the right time.

Asynchronous Orbit Satellites - These satellites are positioned in the lowerorbits around the earth. These continuously change their position with respect to the earth. The different kinds of asynchronous orbit satellites are :

a) Science satellites: These orbit in altitudes of 4800 to 9700 kms. These send their research data to earth via radio telemetry signals.

b) Observation Satellites: These are used for tasks like search and rescue satellites, photography. These act as relay stations to rebroadcast emergency radio-beacon signals from a downed aircraft or ship in trouble. These orbit at altitudes from 480 to 970 kms.

c) Global Positioning System Satellites: Orbiting at altitudes of 9600 to 19200 kms, these are used to determine in terms of latitude ad longitude to determine the exact geographic location.

The two prime communication networks of government of India are NIC and BSNL. Following are the functions of them:

NIC or the National Information Centre, an organization of the Government of India is a premier science and technology organization of the Government of India is a premier science and technology organization in the field of informatics services and information technology applications. To facilitate information and communication applications in government departments at central, state and districts, it has established a nationwide ICT network i.e. NICNET. The Government has designated NICNET as the Government Network. It has gateway modes in Central Government Departments, 35 state and union territories secretariats and 602 district collect orates of India for IT services.

What is most common communication system during disaster?

This is a very difficult question to answer because it depends upon the geographical area affected (this will determine the infrastructure already in place) and then the nature and magnitude of the disaster (e.g. earthquake, tornado, flood, blizzard, nuclear disaster, hurricane, volcano eruption, fire etc) and the effect this has on that infrastructure (e.g. loss of power, loss of telephone/Internet, loss of mobile reception, collapse of road network etc) and then ultimately on what resources are available by governments and local communities to resolve the communication challenges. Power is often cited as the main component associated with the mitigation (use of other communication systems) and recovery of the different communication systems. The list below is an attempt to list the different types of communications systems that could be used in a disaster: (1) existing wireline/fibre optic phones and cables are in place; (2) existing mobile/cell phone technologies; (3) amateur radio communication systems; (4) governmental, military and disaster relief communications systems; (5) satellite communications systems; (6) business infrared or microwave systems (if available); (7) standard television and/or radio systems (one way communications); (8) people travelling using vehicles on roads; (9) people travelling of bikes; (10) people walking between places.

Why when is XM radio going out of business?

Feb 5th, 2009

XM Radio is a great way to listen to music TODAY. However new cars are installing systems that will connect on the internet. These systems use current cell phone land based systems. No need for fancy systems. With a monthly charge for internet you will get internet radio....so why pay???? XM stock has gone to .17 cents....Down from $7.00 on November 2005...it is like howard who???Opra who???? If you pay the help too much money you won't make a profit. Who knew?

Today is a brillant move XM blaw blaw decided since the unenployment numbers are high and people are afraid of loosing everything...lets raise the monthly cost for a product that people can get for free in the car...Remember FM and AM radio? How about a mp3 player or a CD????

I just don't know about how the American companies just don't get it!

The problem is you need to help your loyal customers and get them to assist your growth.

Also if you ever want to use their service call before you buy. It takes about 20 minutes before anyone will pick up...however while you listen all of a sudden you will think someone picked up but....it is Horard or someone telling youit is worth the wait...well it is not!

Why and when will XM go out of business I think 2012.

Think internet car radio...H D Radio and cheeper.

If XM is to stay in business it needs to :

1. cut the high paying hosts

2. you know when movies started the talent was paid less but they got exposure a good lesson to learn

3. reward current customers and not raise the rates

Just remember if you buy the lifetime probuct it may be the lifetime of XM and not the RADIO!!!!

A Blue wire should connecto to the little #61 lug. This wire comes from main harness and GEN warning light on speedo. One or all of these wires with tiny connectors should ne hanging around in there somewhere. Good luck.

Why does satellite radio pick up in parking decks?

Satellite radio can pick up in parking decks due to the presence of metal structures that can reflect and amplify the satellite signals. Additionally, many parking decks are designed with openings that allow for some signal penetration. When a vehicle is parked in a location with partial exposure to the sky, the satellite signal can still be received, although the reception may be weaker compared to open areas.
