Why was the Renaissance society considered secular?
Renaissance society can not be described as being completely secular, as it was affected by many things that were religious. Art was generally dedicated to the church, new ideas about religion were brought forth, in particular the birth of Protestantism. Religious conflict was a huge characteristic of the Renaissance. It is decidedly non-secular (that is, not separate from Religion).
According to the Wikipedia article on the subject:
Secular humanism is a humanist philosophy that upholds reason, ethics, and justice, and specifically rejects the supernatural and the spiritual as the basis of moral reflection and decision-making. Like other types of humanism, secular humanism is a life stance that focuses on the way human beings can lead good, happy, and functional lives. The term "secular humanism" was coined in the 20th century to make a clear distinction from "religious humanism."

A secular society is a society that runs on a non-religious basis. In other words, legislators and government officials are generally barred from imposing laws or policies with the intent of furthering a particular religious agenda. Also, religious considerations do not overrule the civil legal structure. Overall the legal, legislative, and administrative processes in a secular society operate independently of any religious beliefs whatsoever.
A secular society need not be actively anti religious, however. It must simply maintain a separation of powers between the religious establishment and the civil institutions. Indeed, some consider a secular society to be better equipped to protect the equality and freedom of all contingent religions, because no single faith is given a primacy of influence in the structure of the society.
AdditionGood examples are generally the Western European nations where religion is personal and separate from politics. This is in theory the United States but obviously not. A secular society is primarily to keep a majority religion/set of beliefs from persecuting another and therefore in theory keeps any religions from gaining the power and backing of the government.

Very little music from the Medieval era is present today. And even less so in the secular variety. The Medieval era was primarily religious, mostly stapled by Gregorian Chant, motets and organa. The little secular music came mostly from french musicians - northern wandering Trouveres and the southern Troubadours. Today, you would be VERY hard pressed to find any Medieval secular music in popular music today. Very little existed back then. And even fewer exist now.
Is Avenged Sevenfold a Christian or secular band?
Although they have not confirmed that they are Christian, it is possible.
They do sing about murder, rape, suicide, homicide, drug and alcohol use, which make Christians believe that A7X is not a Christian band. Because, of course, murder, rape, suicide, etc. are not Christian topics.
Christians also believe that A7X's song God Hates Us is insulting God, which is true, but it's just not the whole truth. The lead singer of A7X, M. Shadows, was angry at God when he wrote the song, regarding Jimmy's death.
Others songs, such as Dear God and Warmness On The Soul are more Christian-ish songs. The songs Chapter Four and Beast and the Harlot are also Christin based songs. Chapter Four is based on the fourth chapter of Genesis (Cain and Abel), and the Beast and the Harlot is based off of the book of Revelations. Also, these songs are based off of the bible as well:
Nightmare- about someone being left behind in the rapture
Wicked end- The rapture
Afterlife - a man sees his place in hell, then a glimpse of heaven
Their band name, Avenged Sevenfold, is also from the bible.
And here's another fact, most of the members are from a Christian background. Jimmy "The Rev." was raised Catholic, as was M. Shadows, Zacky Vengeance and Synyster Gates. Arin Ilejay (their new drummer after Jimmy's death) was raised (and still is) a Christian. His mom is a gospel singer.
They are, as Syn Gates stated, not tagged as a "Christian band", but they were raised Christians.
So basically, if it comes down to them being Christian, Atheist, or Satanic, it's most likely Christian. But as I stated above, they have not confirmed being Christian.
Was secular music based on gregorian chant?
Very much so. Gregorian chants later in the Middle Ages started to become composed by artists who would write pieces for the church and pieces for secular crowds as well. So basically it was the artists that transitioned causing attention to the secular style of their pieces.
