Is it safe to eat unopened sour cream that was left out overnight?

No it is not. I mean, you can eat it. But it will not taste right. And it might give you some tummy troubles.

That is only partly true. Sour cream and yogurt are made the exact same way... by adding live cultures to milk(for yogurt) or cream(for sour cream), and then leaving them at room temp for up to several days. As with anything, eventually it will "go bad", but if it tastes good, then it is good. Cottage cheese can be homemade by adding some vinegar to a gallon of milk and leaving it on the counter for a day. Then, rinse the vinegar and refrigerate.

As a side note for healthy living, I always use plain yogurt instead of sour cream. It has all the taste without the fat, and none of the added chemicals and fake sweeteners that Fat Free Sour Cream has. Try it.

Is curdled sour cream safe?

Sour cream, as in the delightfully tasty topping for baked potatoes, will not harm your baby while you're pregnant. Neither will cheese which is another cultured product or yogurt (another) or any of a number of other cultured products. Unpasteurised milk products should not be eaten while pregnant but it is quite safe to eat pasteurised products. Be careful about taking advice on a website. If you have a question like that, ask your doctor.

All Purpose cream won't give you the thickness or taste of sour cream. It wouldn't taste terrible though. How many cups in 16 oz sour cream?

Answer
  1. A cup is 8 ounces, so there would be 2 cups in 16 ounces of anything.
  2. Uh- no. A cup of lead will weigh much more than a cup of feathers. You are close, though. A cup of sourcream weighs 8.5 ounces. So you would not quite get 2 cups from a pint.

The first answer is wrong because sour cream is packaged by weight, not by volume. The second answer does not precisely answer the question. While it is true that 16 "fluid ounces" equals 2 cups in volume, it is not true that 16 ounces (1 pound) is equal to 2 cups in volume. That said, a 16 oz container of sour cream contains approximately 30 tablespoons which is exactly 1.875 cups. -- Source: Great Value 16 oz. All Natural Sour Cream packaging label.

Can you substitute sour cream for cream cheese?

This works for dips and non-cooked items. If the sauce is to be frozen or cooked, the yogurt will break. If it is used in baking, it has less fat, and may or may not affect the recipe.

.......

No.They will taste 100% Different.
You can substitute natural yogurt for sour cream in most recipes with good results and the advantage that the final product will be lower in calories because it has less fat. But many commercial yogurts are thickened with cornstarch or gelatin instead of being naturally cultured. These yogurts might not work in your recipe.

Plain cream is not a good substitute for sour cream because it does not have either the thick consistency or the acidity of sour cream. In a pinch, you might be able to "sour" plain cream by adding a Tbs or two of vinegar or lemon juice.
