What is the most popular food in Spain as a national dish common to Spanish homes?

Spain has many regions and each region has it's own favorite dishes. Spaniards as a group eat lots of potatoes, garbanzos, rice, fish, chicken and fresh fruits and vegetables. In fact, almost all fruits and vegetables are purchased fresh. Sausages, cheeses, and cured meats are also very popular.

However, due to the extremely varied regions there is no single dish representative of all Spain with one exception. Bread is eaten universally at most meals.

How many fags can you bring back from Spain?

Assuming that by "fags" you mean "cigarettes", there is no real limit however if you transport large quantaties of cigarettes then you may be questioned by a customs officer and if you are unable to prove that they are for your own use then they ,and any vehicle used to transport them, may be consficated. Spain however has it's own regulations. If you are moving large quantatiesof duty paid cigarettes (800 to 1200) then documentation will be asked to be provided. If you are moving even larger quantaties (1200 and over) then a form known as a Documento de Acompanamiento will have to be produced.

How many McDonald's are in Spain?

There are over 800
Surprisingly, yes. 800 of them. But there are differences. For a start, a French MacD has far more seats, since even here the French like to take their time over a meal, preferably an hour or so. The signs are far less garish. And the menu is French; salads, local cheeses, yoghurts, fruit compotes and, of course, croques monsieur. And there's the Royal DeLuxe, which is not a burger at all but big slice of beef with an old-fashioned mustard sauce, which is stronger than the standard English or American sauces and closer to the traditional French mustard tastes. It was introduced as an experiment, and is now second only to the Big Mac; after all, the favourite French dish has always been 'steak frites'. And, of course, you can have wine with it.

It depends on what you are calling a "tortilla".

A Mexican tortilla is circular, unleavened, corn or wheat flour flatbread that can be used for wraps and fajitas.

The flour and corn tortillas from Mexico were initially used as an implement to get other food in the mouth by the indigenous inhabitants. The Spanish named them tortillas because their shape was similar to what they ate in Spain.

A Spanish tortilla is a potato and egg quiche.

Tortillas are not a quiche which has a pastry, nor are they frittatas. Frittatas are beaten eggs with a potato filling. Frittatas are slowly cooked in a frying pan until they are almost cooked through. Then they other side is either baked, broiled, or turned over and then finished.

Tortillas are Spanish. Originally they were probably small cubes of potato filling bound together with beaten eggs. They were prepared in Spain before the New World was discovered and were a subsistence food of the peasants. They are always fried on both sides.

As conditions improved for the peasants and the popularity of the tortilla grew with other classes other fillings were adapted until today there are many varieties. Now days tortillas may contain, meat, cheese, sausage, sea food, and almost any kind of vegetable or herb. After they are completely fried they may be further cooked in water or broth but they tend to be very delicate and difficult to handle.

What are the Spanish specialties?

If by 'specialties' you mean food, there's a lot of choice. There's the well known paella - fish, vegetable or chicken (if you want recipes, there's hundreds online). There's a lot of types of tapas, which is basically a selection of smaller dishes - a bit like lots of small starters. In Spain, a lot of people eat their breakfast out at cafes and such, and they often serve things like tortillas (omelette), my abuelita when I'm over there always cooks me tortilla de patatas (very common, as is pincho de tortilla which is a tapas version of a tortilla, in other words tortilla cut into small pieces).

Churros are also pretty good, they're a bit like long out doughnuts that are battered, very yummy! Also, sangria is always good, and very spanish :D

Hope I've helped a bit.

Why is paella a traditional food in Spain?

Paella is not a traditional Spanish food. It is a traditional food in the area of Valencia.

There are many, many kinds of Paella. Almost all of them contain rice in some quantity.. Three are widely known. They are Paella Valenciana which has rice, meat, vegtables, and land snails but no fish or seafood; Seafood Paella which has any kind of seafood available in lieu of meat and snails, rice, and omits the vegatables and beans, Seafood Paella generally has shrimp and or logostinos, clams and mussells ; The third kind is Paella Mixta which can contain just about anything edible.

Paella is cooked in a large diameter, flat bottomed sheet metal pan called a paellera. Olive oil is added to the pan, brought up to temperature over an open fire and then the rice is added and sauteed. The other ingrediants are then added in order of the time required to cook them. Those requiring the most time are added first and those requiring less time are added in such a way that every thing is completely cooked at the same time or as close as possible. It is a group operation, the cooking is generally done by the men present, and generous amounts of wine are both imbibed and added to the paella if desired.
