Stalking

Stalking is the illegal activity of repeatedly directing unwanted attention to another person. It usually shows a mental or emotional problem in the stalker or criminal intent. Stalking can be following a person around, trying to talk to them or lingering outside their house, also threats or property damage. However, even sending messages or gifts to an unwilling recipient can be just as harassing and is also considered stalking.

What should you do if a guy thinks you stalk him?

User Avatar

There is a difference between a love-sick young man following you around or trying to fit into your group or getting your attenion and a stalker that skulks behind bushes, trees or stands across the street and follows you everywhere. If this young man is stalking you by sneaking around and standing across the street from your home; perhaps uttering threats to you or seems to be everywhere you are and is angry that you are dating then you need to tell your parents or at least your employer or a good friend. Then you should go to the police and get a restraining order although restraining orders are seldom worth the paper they are written on it may be just enough of a deterrent to stop the stalker. Never walk alone during the night and if you are in a secluded area alone walk down the middle of the road carefully and not besides bushes or trees; carry pepper spray (it's illegal, but it's a good weapon and could save your life) or, take defense classes for women. If you drive do not park in under-ground parking or out of the way darkened parking lots; do not park by a van as a victim can quickly be shoved into a van without anyone seeing; before getting into your car look inside the car first (especially the back seat.) If you are shopping and it's dark then either go with a friend or when you leave the mall go to your car with a group of people. If you spot your stalker while at the mall get security and they will safely see you to your car. If you are grocery shopping and you are nervous you can ask the cashier to have someone accompany you to your car. Keep one or two lights on in your home. If you live alone and can afford it get an alarm system. If you own a car sleep with your car keys under your pillow or near you at all times so you can press the alarm system on it should you even hear a noise outside and suspect your stalker is trying to get in. The high pitch of a car alarm will awaken neighbors and it will be enough for the stalker to get out of the area. If you have a large dog do not seclude the dog to one room, but have the dog sleep in the same room as you. Even little dogs can be a warning signal and are extremely loyal to their owners. There are petitions being made to have better stalking laws without waiting until the stalker does bodily harm before the police will intervene. Often by the time a stalker may attack his victim it is often too late.

What do you do when your friend is stalking you?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

If you have a real stalker, who is affecting your daily life or who has the potential to hurt you, you should talk to the police.

If you're not worried about your general well-being and he or she isn't threatening you, a trustworthy friend/or adult who knows more about the situation may be able to help you. But if you are at all worried about your safety, don't be afraid to talk to the police. You need to know if this person is really a stalker. They could just be someone who admires you and enjoys being around you. If it is a stalker, you should find out if it's something you can handle on your own without getting physically hurt, emotionally damaged, or forced into anything. If any of these might occur, you should notify the police right away. I wish you luck.

Can you get your security deposit back if break your lease because someone is stalking you?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Unless you have solid proof that you can show the landlord than it is really up to him/her if they want to return your deposit. If you have filed a police report then you may want to provide the landlord with a copy. You may want to go back and read your lease contract again. There may be a loop hole in the fine print that may or may not release your obligation.

How do you tell someone to stop stalking you?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

If you know that person, if it is NOT over the Internet, go up to them and say, " Hey! I don't feel very comfortable with you following me so stop!", if it is over the Internet , like FaceBook, MySpace, Twitter, or YouTube, block them and if they continue and hack their way back in, change your password, get on their page, but this time before you block them report them for Scam, now you block them hopefully this will work because if it doesn't then you may highly consider deleting and remaking your account but in this result you will lose all your friends, followers, and subscribers.

Why do you feel like someones watching you or are you just paranoid?

User Avatar

Asked by RomanceGurl

That would be simple paranoia.

A psychologist would say that your conscience ( that little guy on your shoulder ) is telling you that something you are doing or have done is wrong and the paranoia is the outward sign of guilt.

Because I am being watched. lol. I'm serious though. Every night I see this strange man walking by my house and it scares the living crap out of me. (No I'm not halucinating.) And the very next morning I cant see someone watching me I just know deep inside someone is looking right at me. "I live in a creepy neighborhood."

What happened to Tracey Thurman?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

On June 10, 1983, Charles "Buck" Thurman, husband of Tracey Thurman, assaulted Tracey in Torrington, CT. He stabbed her 13 times in the chest, neck, shoulders, and face - 10 minutes after she had called the police.

He kicked her in the head with a booted foot, grabbed their 2-year-old son, told the child, "I've killed your rotten mother," and then dropped the child on top of Tracey in a pool of blood. It took 25 minutes for the police to arrive.

Astonishingly, Tracey did not die, but the damage was immense. She spent seven months in the hospital. Although the left side of her body was able to function, she had no tactile sensation. The right side of her body was able to feel, but she had lost 80% of her motor skills.

Tracey had multiple restraining orders against Buck and also made numerous reports to the police about Buck's threats. Tracey Thurman was the inspiration of Thurman Law which called for mandatory arrests in wife-beating cases in Connecticut and several other states. She sued the city of Torrington and received $2.3 million in damages in 1985. Tracy Thurman's story was later made into a 1989 television movie, entitled "A Cry for Help: The Tracey Thurman Story."

How do you be a good stalker?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

What sort of a question is that?! Stalking is illegal! You can't be a good stalker. It's like saying; 'How can I be a good drug user?'. Stalking is bad. If you are stalking people now, it's best to stop ASAP before you get into legal trouble (AKA go to jail). How would you like it if weirdos are trying to peek into your shower everyday! It's wrong, gross, and illegal.

What is the statute of limitations on stalking in Georgia?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Contrary to popular belief, warrants do not expire. The only way to make the warrant go away is to appear in court or somehow have the charges thrown out.

The statute of limitations is the time period that prosecutors have to bring criminal charges against someone. Murder has no statute of limitations. Assault might only have 1 or 2 years, so if you were assaulted and didn't press charges for 2 years, for example, then you can never press charges.

Warrants are a different matter because warrants are issued after the prosecution filed charges. The judge issues the warrant and they _never_ expire.

What do you say to a boy that calls you a stalker?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

"stalkers" are human beings. They are people who have incredibly low self esteem and low self worth.

Experiences in childhood have formed dysfunctional and toxic views about what defines a relationship between two people.

A lot of people assume that stalking is a behaviour that exists of its own - not true. Stalking is a result of someone who has an incredible loneliness at heart. They have not been able to connect emotionally with anyone in their lives because of abusive and disruptive experiences in childhood.

That loneliness has become fear and a fear of never being loved or valued.

There is one sentence that is sure to overcome stalking and behaviours too. Never reject or try to shut out someone who displays stalking behaviour. By being mean or unpleasant you are reinforcing their views about themselves and relationships in general.

The greatest cure to stalking is kindness and human empathy. It takes two to have a war so end your side of the war and reach out to someone who needs your help. Tell them you are a friend and that you aren't afraid or concerned and understand that life is hard and unfair.

Make them a coffee or tea - tell them they are welcome to come any time. Guess what? you've just ended "stalking behaviour" and perhaps shown someone the first kindness they have experienced within their lives.

It is the world that creates stalking behaviour and they are victims just as much as those they victimize.

You can of course physically remove them from your life by calling the police - but that only works if you believe the police are competent and consistent and ready to help you. This isn't always the case and by involving authority you most certainly will have ramped up the sheer terror of abandonment and rejection within the person who is displaying stalking behaviour.

So - the choice is yours. But it's the world and many unhappy childhood experiences that create stalking behaviour - rather different from the one dimensional and incorrect reporting by media and "journalists".

What to do if you have a stalker?

User Avatar

Asked by Wiki User

Notify the police.

Get a restraining order.

First of all before you do anything you may want to think about the situation. If you know them personally, have known them for years, or are close friends with them, ask them to please leave you alone, and say that they might be scaring you. Knowing you feel discomforted can usually makes them more reasonable. The person may just be a someone from school that just simply likes you.

But,if the the stalker is a complete stranger, its safe to say you should NOT talk to the person unless its completely necessary. You don't know what kind of a threat they are. Go to a place where there are other people, call a parent, a friend, or even the police if you are scared for your life. Use that smartphone you likely carry with you everywhere and get video evidence. Make sure to your "admirer" that you clearly do not want him around, and get him kicked out of your life. Extreme cases call for nothing short of a restraining order.

Keep in mind, however, that a restraining order is nothing more than a piece of paper, another hammer in the bag to hit your stalker with IF he actually does something. It does not prevent him from doing anything so is no form of security.

Many will give you the silly suggestion that you should get a gun, learn how to use it, and obtain a CCW. Such advice is patently ridiculous for one reason: when faced with a high stress situation which might call for the use of defensive measures, about 99% of the population will flip out and completely forget any training they have received, making firing a weapon as dangerous for that person as the public at large. Nothing is harder than trying to level a gun on a charging threat, and effectively operating that weapon to end that threat. And, unless you are a quick-draw artist, the likelihood that you will be able to draw your weapon, or even find where you are carrying it when faced with an immediate threat is just about zero. So, unless you plan on putting in about four hours a day of interdiction weapons training in a variety of different scenarios, AND walking around with your gun in your hand so you can be ready, don't waste your time, or put the rest of us in jeopardy.
